Our ELS Language Center in Melbourne, Florida is located on the campus of the Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) just minutes from Florida's beautiful white-sand beaches. Florida Tech offers a state-of-the-art campus nestled in a tropical garden of flowering plants and palm trees. Many students enjoy weekend visits to Walt Disney World Resorts®, Magic Kingdom®, EPCOT®, MGM Studios®, Animal Kingdom® and Universal Studios®. Students may also experience Space Shuttle and rocket launches from nearby NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

The ELS Intensive English Program, our most popular program of study, will help you significantly improve your English skills, achieve greater fluency, and fully prepare you for university study in the USA. More than 550 universities, colleges and career schools accept completion of an advanced ELS level as meeting the English language requirement for admission.

College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.
Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.

Center Staff
Betty Jean Humpherys
Betty Jean, Acting Center Director/Academic Director began her ESL career teaching at ELS/St. Petersburg in 1981. She has taught ESL at Florida Institute of Technology, Brigham Young University and ELS/Melbourne. She received her MA in Linguistics from BYU. At ELS/Melbourne she began as the Registrar in 2002 and has served as a teacher, Academic Director and is currently the Acting Center Director. Her goal is to maintain a comfortable, productive academic environment ensuring steady student matriculation to the best US universities. Aside from being a second mom to the students, she is the proud mother of three college students Sarah, Emily, and Michael.
Maria Quillen
Maria has been the International Student Advisor since 2007. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and a Master's degree in Bicultural/Bilingual Studies. She has lived and traveled the world including the Philippines, Germany, and Japan. Maria worked as an Outreach Coordinator for the Texas Educational Foundation, a Conflict Mediator for the Albuquerque Metropolitan Courthouse, and a USO referral agent. Through her passion for a multi-cultural environment, Maria brings energy and creativity to the office and the classroom.
Rene Aiello
Rene has been the Registrar at ELS/Melbourne since 2005. Rene’s previous work experience as an administrative assistant in a school district and law firm in Pennsylvania has been an asset to this center. She is detail-oriented, positive, patient, and loves working with international students. Rene moved to Melbourne three years ago with her husband and three sons. She enjoys the beach, pool and being with her big Italian family. Rene adds finesse and flair to our Melbourne family.
Amy Hoover
Ms. Hoover is the Senior Instructor and has been with ELS Language Centers since 1997. She has a Bachelors degree in English Literature from Indiana University and spent a year teaching English as a Second Language in Seoul, Korea. She worked as a tutor in Indianapolis before joining ELS/Melbourne. She has also worked as an International Student Advisor. She is a TOEFL test administrator. Amy’s primary responsibilities include training new teachers and maintaining relationships between instructors and students.
