Center Information

Our ELS Language Center in La Verne, California is a lovely, safe, and small city with a population of 31,000 located just 55 kilometers east of Los Angeles, and near Pasadena and Orange County. The University of La Verne is located at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and surrounds downtown La Verne, a residential community that provides students with a friendly small-town atmosphere and ideal study location. La Verne is a short excursion away from world-class surfing beaches like Huntington Beach, and world-famous tourist attractions like Disneyland and Universal Studios. The location of the center makes visits to renowned museums, cultural events, amusement parks, and shopping centers easy.

ELS has developed a 12-week comprehensive Prep Program for the TOEFL® iBT that gives you the best preparation possible and the confidence you need to succeed! The new Internet based TOEFL® iBT requires students to answer questions related to speaking, listening, reading and writing – and measures not just what you know, but how well you can express yourself and apply your knowledge. By taking the Prep Program, you will practice integrated reading and listening skills, improve writing and speaking, as well as learn test-taking strategies.

Additional Learning Opportunities

Through regularly organized activities you can practice English both in and out of the classroom with native guest speakers or American students discussing various topics.

College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.

Scholarships/Discounts
After completion of the full ELS Intensive English Program qualified students may receive credit for ELS and/or tuition discounts at select host universities and colleges, once they matriculate.

Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.

Volunteerism Experience
ELS Language Centers offers a unique opportunity for full-time students who wish to participate in volunteer experiences at public and private, national and local organizations that provide services to adults, youth, children, elderly, handicapped and needy, or services protecting and improving the environment. Students who complete this experience will receive a certificate, which recognizes their participation.

Concurrent Enrollment at Host College
ELS students who have received conditional acceptance from the host college/university may have the chance to attend one or more individual college courses (for credit) while still studying in the Intensive English Program or Fast Track Program.

TOEFL Testing Center

Shared typical on campus dorm rooms. Shared hallway bathrooms. Rooms include 2 single beds, 2 desks, 2 dressers and closets. Rooms are well lit with big windows. Males and females may NOT share the same room in the dorm; however, males and females are housed on the same floor.

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have their own room and are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Sandra Adams
Sandra received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of California, Irvine in 1993. She has over 17 years of professional experience in international education having worked for major ESL programs in Southern California. She has served as Center Director at ELS/La Verne for the past three years and enjoys watching students’ personal and academic growth as they pursue their dreams in the United States.

Aimee Moreno
Aimee received her B.A. in English from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA and her M.A. in TESOL from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, CA. After teaching English in a private university in Cuernavaca, Morelos in Mexico for approximately four years, Aimee returned to the United States and taught various levels of English and ESL. She then worked in educational nonprofits for several years. Aimee is pleased to have returned to the field of ESL as Academic Director in ELS/La Verne.

Alexandra Wong
Alexandra received her BA in English Literature from the University of La Verne. She has been working for ELS/La Verne for almost 2 years as the Housing Coordinator and now as the current Registrar. She also teaches in the program and enjoys cultivating cross-cultural understanding with ELS students.

Paige Moore-Mateski
Paige is working on a Bachelor’s degree in business from Cal Poly Pomona, and has an AA degree in fine and performing arts from Citrus College Vocal Conservatory in Glendora, CA. Paige coordinates housing and activities for ELS/La Verne. She loves working and playing with the students who are involved in ELS and looks forward to a long and happy future with the company.
