Our ELS Language Center in St. Petersburg, Florida is located on the beautiful waterfront campus of Eckerd College, only 20 minutes from the famous Gulf of Mexico. St. Petersburg, situated on Florida's tropical west coast, is well known for its beaches, mild climate, and educational and cultural attractions. Many students enjoy taking trips to Disney World®, EPCOT Center®, Sea World, Busch Gardens®, and Universal Studios®. Cultural attractions include the world famous Salvador Dali Museum and the Smithsonian affiliated Florida International Museum.

January Youth Homestay, held on the campus of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, is the ideal language and cultural experience for young people. This program features homestay with an American family, 16 lessons per week of English, supervised recreational activities, and visits to local American elementary schools. Recreation choices may include archery, arts and crafts, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and uniquely “American” sports.
At the core of this program is homestay with a carefully selected American host family, where participants practice their English skills and learn about American life and culture. January Youth Homestay includes beach trips, shopping, and excursions to Florida’s best-known theme parks, including Busch Gardens®, Universal Studios®, Disney’s Magic Kingdom®, and Islands of Adventure®.

The English for Executives Program is designed for junior and mid-level professionals who want to combine general English practice along with career-specific communication training. The English for Executives Program consists of three 50-minutes interactive group lessons and three personalized, 50-minute one-to-one lessons each day in ELS group classes. The course length may be two or four weeks, beginning on any of the 26 year-round Intensive English Program start dates.

The ELS Super Intensive English Program is the fastest way to improve English proficiency. This course combines highly concentrated, one-to-one instruction and a curriculum targeted specially to the participant’s needs. Courses are individually designed based upon level of English ability, desired language use and outcomes, and length of time available for study. This program can begin on any Monday and may last for one week to four weeks or more. The Super Intensive Program consists of either 20, 30 or 45 private, 50-minute lessons each week, taught on a Monday to Friday schedule. ELS will provide assistance with accommodation arrangements.

For maximum results in just one week’s time, the Super Intensive Plus Program is the best choice for a busy executive. This highly rigorous course consists of 70 lessons, 50 minutes each, of combined in-class instruction and out-of-class cultural activities, generally taught from Monday through Sunday. Super Intensive Plus is ideal in preparation for an important business presentation or meeting in the United States. Due to the intensity of this program, intermediate English proficiency is highly recommended. ELS will provide assistance with accommodation arrangements.

College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.
College Credit for ELS
Eligible ELS students can receive academic credit from the ELS host college/university for having completed key ELS level(s). This credit may be applied toward any degree eventually earned at that college, but is not transferable should the student transfer to another college or university.
Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.
College Certificate Program(s) at Eckerd College
Students in ELS Intensive English Program Levels 107 (or 108 in some cases) and above may have the opportunity to earn one or more university or college certificates (taught by college professors) while they progress through the Intensive English Program. Certificate Program start dates vary. Available certificate courses are:

Center Staff
Andrea Domonkos
Ms. Domonkos, Center Director started with ELS Language Centers in 2001 at the Santa Monica Center but has been at ELS/St. Petersburg since 2006. She holds an MA in TESOL from Hunter College, the City University of New York and has been in the field of ESL since 1986, having taught at numerous institutions, including Youngstown State University, California State University, Fresno, and Fresno City College. Ms. Domonkos is also active in IELTS-related activities. Her goal is to make ELS/St. Petersburg a 7-star ELS Center, whereby the academic, social, and cultural expectations of the students are exceeded! She has two boys, Aaron, age 18, and Andrew, age 3.
Karen Grubbs
Ms. Grubbs is the Academic Director and has been with ELS Language Centers for the past 10 years. She has been in the field of education for over twenty-five years. Her degrees include a BS in Biology and a BS in Medical Technology. She is a licensed Medical Technologist in all areas for the state of Florida. Ms. Grubbs has worked with committees within ELS Language Centers to develop curriculum for our classes and is a member and frequent presenter of Sunshine State TESOL, SETESOL, and TESOL. Ms. Grubbs is warm and friendly and is always happy to help our students. She enjoys reading and spending time with her two precious grandsons.
Nina Rotter
Ms. Rotter has been the International Student Advisor since 2004. However, she has been employed on the campus of Eckerd College since 1998 in different capacities, as Study Abroad Advisor for Eckerd College, as well as Administrative Assistant and substitute teacher at ELS. Prior to that she worked at the University of Kentucky as International Student Advisor for 11 years. Nina is called the “Mom of ELS” for the care and help she gives our students. Her hobbies include reading, cooking, and going on cruises.
Debi Edwards
Ms. Edwards has been the Registrar at ELS/St. Petersburg since 1989. Previously, she was the Administrative Assistant for the Director of Teacher Education at Drury University in Missouri. Ms. Edwards has strong organizational skills and attention to detail. She holds a BA in English Education/TEFL and has several years ESL teaching experience. Ms. Edwards has two daughters, Brooke and Megan. Her hobbies include gardening, photography, and enjoying Florida's natural beauty!
