Our ELS Language Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota is located on the beautifully wooded, 220-hectare campus of the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks. Located on the border of North Dakota and Minnesota, UND is listed as one of the best 200 national universities in U.S. News & World Report and one of 100 universities listed in America's Most Wired Colleges. Grand Forks has numerous parks, bike trails and two golf courses, including a new Arnold Palmer-designed course. Students can also enjoy UND men's national championship hockey team games in the best college hockey facility in the country.

College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.

Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.


On-campus Student Residence

Shared typical on campus dorm room. Shared hallway bathrooms. Rooms include: in room computer line & cord, cable TV line & cord, and ARH proramming. Students also have access to the complex computer lab, residence hall fitness center and services provided by the complex centers. Linens, towels, blankets and pillows are not provided. A limited number of singles available upon special request (for extra cost). Students clean their own rooms during their stay.

Homestay

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have their own room and are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Bela Hettich
Bela, Center Director, has moved to Grand Forks from Minneapolis. She earned her M.A. in Linguistics from the University of North Dakota. Prior to joining ELS Language Centers in Grand Forks, Bela taught English and linguistics at post-secondary level. She has maintained her interest in international affairs since the time she was involved in humanitarian relief efforts in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Bela and her husband have two boys, ages 10 and 6. She enjoys learning about other cultures, their languages, and literary heritage.

Janelle Schryver
Janelle, Registrar, has lived in East Grand Forks for all of her life. She attended Northwest Technical College in East Grand Forks for a business degree in banking services. Prior to joining the ELS team, she was a customer service representative at a local Grand Forks bank for 10 years and previous a daycare supervisor for 7 years. Janelle also is involved with United Way a local charity. Janelle and her husband have 2 daughters’ ages, 16 and 2. She was married in 2005 in Jamaica. Hobbies include, cooking, baking, walking and most importantly spending time with family.

Chris Haake
Chris, Instructor, is a native North Dakotan. He received his MA in English from the University of North Dakota Prior to teaching at ELS Language Centers, he was a university instructor, teaching writing, interpersonal communication, linguistics, and business English. Chris has also studied at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. He is married with three children. In his spare time, he is a woodworker, photographer, and collector of antique American-made wristwatches.

Luis Brito
Luis, Instructor, has lived and worked in Grand Forks for 12 years. He holds an MA in Management from Central Michigan University. He teaches Spanish at Lake Region College. Prior to teaching at ELS, Luis has taught Cross-Cultural Communication and International Business at the University of Mary. As a military member, Luis has lived in England, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He is married and has two daughters, ages 25 and 26. Luis enjoys participating if community programs and sports, including skydiving, skiing and motorcycle riding.

Kate Palmer
Kate, Instructor, is from Staples, Minnesota. She holds an MA in English from the University of North Dakota. She worked in Ghana, Africa during the summer of 2005 as a teacher to students in the primary and secondary levels. Kate’s hobbies include water skiing, rock climbing and scuba diving.

Kathleen Vacek
Kathleen, Instructor, has taught English language learners in Grand Forks, Minneapolis, the Republic of Georgia, and China since 2005. She earned her MA in English from the University of North Dakota in 2006. Prior to working at ELS, she was an academic advisor at Walden University and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Kathleen served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Georgia. Kathleen’s interests/hobbies include cooking (and of course eating) food from around the world, cycling, hiking.

Jill Hughes
Jill, Instructor, has taught English in a range of settings from high school to adult students in Minnesota. Jill holds a BA in Sociology/Anthropology and Spanish from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa and is currently completing an MA in ESL/Teaching from Hamline University. Jill has taught English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Russia.
