Center Information

ELS/Cincinnati is located at the University of Cincinnati (UC) in Cincinnati’s uptown district, north of downtown. The ultra-modern campus is equipped with every convenience necessary to live and learn. The ELS center is close to shops, restaurants, sporting events and a wide variety of nearby attractions that earned Cincinnati a place among the top 20 “fun cities in the USA”. Cincinnati has one of the highest ratios of Global 500 companies per capita of any city in the United States, including Procter & Gamble, General Electric and Tata Consultancy Services. College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.

Scholarships/Discounts
After completion of the full ELS Intensive English Program qualified students may receive credit for ELS and/or tuition discounts at select host universities and colleges, once they matriculate.

Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.

Concurrent Enrollment at Host College
ELS students who have received conditional acceptance from the host college/university may have the chance to attend one or more individual college courses (for credit) while still studying in the Intensive English Program or Fast Track Program.



Off-Campus Student Residence

Luxury option! Students will live in luxury 4-bedroom apartments, with a private bedroom, and each apartment has two bathrooms. Apartments are fully furnished and include cable and high-speed internet. There are 2 fitness centers and an outdoor swimming pool, as well as a computer lab on-site. Students will cook their own meals or purchase a meal plan once they arrive on campus. There is a regular shuttle between the off-campus housing and the University for students.

Homestay

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have their own room and are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Teri Laliberte
Teri is the Center Director for the Cincinnati center and has many years of experience teaching in and directing ESL programs. She is a native of Southern Florida and grew up around many different cultures. After completing her Master’s in Applied Linguistics, she worked for a start-up university in Istanbul, Turkey. Once that school was up and running she received a fellowship from the US government to do teacher training in rural Turkey. After returning to the US she was the Program Coordinator for the ESL program at the University of Chicago. She has lived in Cincinnati for 3 years with her husband and three children.

David Patent
David is originally from New York City. He began his career as an English language teacher eight years ago in Hungary, where he taught at the high school level for five years. After returning to the United States, he worked as an instructor for ELS Language Centers in Cleveland, Ohio and San Rafael, California. He earned an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language in May 2008 from the University of San Francisco. He moved to Cincinnati in August 2008 to take the position of Academic Director at ELS. David oversees and assists instructors and is always happy to help students with their questions and problems. He also teaches classes when he has the opportunity.

Karen Becker
Karen, Registrar is a native of Ohio. She studied Anthropology and Photography at Ohio University and traveled abroad through the Visual Communications Department. She enjoys traveling to new places, taking pictures to document her experiences and meeting new people along the way. Now at ELS, Karen is managing student tuition, housing payments and bill paying. Karen has lived in many cities across the country and is excited about being back in Ohio, assisting others to come and learn in her home town.
