ELS/Honolulu is located on the downtown campus of Hawai’i Pacific University (HPU) Hawaii’s largest private university. HPU has excellent university facilities that ELS students have access to: libraries, computer labs, student lounges, Language Partner Programs, customized university workshops, sports facilities, campus events and much more. Hawaii is a tropical paradise offering near perfect year-round weather, ideal for outdoor recreation such as hiking, sunbathing, and enjoying the exciting nightlife and cultural attractions. The USS Arizona and Iolani Palace are just a few popular attractions that can be easily reached using Honolulu’s excellent public transportation.

The English for Executives Program is designed for junior and mid-level professionals who want to combine general English practice along with career-specific communication training. The English for Executives Program consists of three 50-minutes interactive group lessons and three personalized, 50-minute one-to-one lessons each day in ELS group classes. The course length may be two or four weeks, beginning on any of the 26 year-round Intensive English Program start dates.

Super Intensive English (30 lessons)

The ELS Super Intensive English Program is the fastest way to improve English proficiency. This course combines highly concentrated, one-to-one instruction and a curriculum targeted specially to the participant’s needs. Courses are individually designed based upon level of English ability, desired language use and outcomes, and length of time available for study. This program can begin on any Monday and may last for one week to four weeks or more. The Super Intensive Program consists of either 20, 30 or 45 private, 50-minute lessons each week, taught on a Monday to Friday schedule. ELS will provide assistance with accommodation arrangements.

Super Intensive Plus

For maximum results in just one week’s time, the Super Intensive Plus Program is the best choice for a busy executive. This highly rigorous course consists of 70 lessons, 50 minutes each, of combined in-class instruction and out-of-class cultural activities, generally taught from Monday through Sunday. Super Intensive Plus is ideal in preparation for an important business presentation or meeting in the United States. Due to the intensity of this program, intermediate English proficiency is highly recommended. ELS will provide assistance with accommodation arrangements.

Through regularly organized activities you can practice English both in and out of the classroom with native guest speakers or American students discussing various topics.

College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.

College Credit for ELS
Eligible ELS students can receive academic credit from the ELS host college/university for having completed key ELS level(s). This credit may be applied toward any degree eventually earned at that college, but is not transferable should the student transfer to another college or university.

Scholarships/Discounts
After completion of the full ELS Intensive English Program qualified students may receive credit for ELS and/or tuition discounts at select host universities and colleges, once they matriculate.

Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.

Volunteerism Experience
ELS Language Centers offers a unique opportunity for full-time students who wish to participate in volunteer experiences at public and private, national and local organizations that provide services to adults, youth, children, elderly, handicapped and needy, or services protecting and improving the environment. Students who complete this experience will receive a certificate, which recognizes their participation.

Concurrent Enrollment at Host College
ELS students who have received conditional acceptance from the host college/university may have the chance to attend one or more individual college courses (for credit) while still studying in the Intensive English Program or Fast Track Program.



Off-Campus Student Residence

Shared off campus student residence. Rooms are doubles (2 persons) unless a single is requested at an additional price. Triples (3 persons) may also be available in some cases at a reduced price. The Ohia Student Suites are in a large housing complex equipped with a pool, and located just a few blocks from Waikiki beach. Rooms include a bed, dresser, desk and chair for each resident. Kitchenettes are available. Free internet access is available in each room, and assistance with establishing phone service is provided. Students must provide their own equipment. Linens are also included. Students clean their own rooms during their stay.

Note: When Ohia Student Suites is full, students will be notified prior to the start of the session if their dorm room assignment is to the Hana Student Suites. Rooms types and amenities are similar to that of the Ohia Student Suites.

Homestay

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students usually have their own room, but occasionally a shared double occupancy room may be assigned in the case of room shortage. Students are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Roger Fong
Roger, Center Director was born and raised in Panama City, Panama. He has lived in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Boston, Amsterdam, Paris, Luzern and now proudly calls Hawaii home. A graduate from the California State University system as well as having attended the Sorbonne and the University of Paris, Roger has been in the ESL world since 1993. He enjoys spending his weekends trying to find the most “authentic” Mexican cuisine on the island.

Ivan Lui
Ivan is the International Student Advisor at ELS, Honolulu. He is from O’ahu, Hawai’i, the second of three sons, and is married. He has a degree in psychology/counseling, and he likes taking long walks and bike rides anywhere because it gives him time to explore and think. In addition to playing and taking care of two guinea pigs, he likes to cook and eat especially spicy and garlicky foods.

Jonny Lim
Jonny, Registrar, a graduate of the University of Hawaii system . He has lived in Irvine, Houston, Chicago, Honolulu, Japan, Korea , Jakarta, and Saudi Arabia Sydney, Australia. He enjoys spending his weekends cooking gourmet food for family and friends.

Kevin Nitta
Kevin is the Academic Director and a graduate from the University of Hawaii. Born and raised in Hawaii, Kevin has been teaching ESL for almost two decades. In his spare time he enjoys playing with his dog, playing chess and reading a good book.

Cibele Randall
Cibele is the Housing Coordinator/IELTS Administrator for ELS Honolulu. She is originally from Brasilia, Brazil and the second of three daughters. She moved to the US in 2006 and was recently married and has a newborn daughter. Her degree is in Business Administration and she enjoys cooking and baking. She also likes to watch cooking shows as this gives her fresh new ideas of things to make for her friends and family.
