College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.
Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.

Center Staff
Bela Hettich
Bela, Center Director, has moved to Grand Forks from Minneapolis. She earned her M.A. in Linguistics from the University of North Dakota. Prior to joining ELS Language Centers in Grand Forks, Bela taught English and linguistics at post-secondary level. She has maintained her interest in international affairs since the time she was involved in humanitarian relief efforts in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Bela and her husband have two boys, ages 10 and 6. She enjoys learning about other cultures, their languages, and literary heritage.
Janelle Schryver
Janelle, Registrar, has lived in East Grand Forks for all of her life. She attended Northwest Technical College in East Grand Forks for a business degree in banking services. Prior to joining the ELS team, she was a customer service representative at a local Grand Forks bank for 10 years and previous a daycare supervisor for 7 years. Janelle also is involved with United Way a local charity. Janelle and her husband have 2 daughters’ ages, 16 and 2. She was married in 2005 in Jamaica. Hobbies include, cooking, baking, walking and most importantly spending time with family.
Chris Haake
Chris, Instructor, is a native North Dakotan. He received his MA in English from the University of North Dakota Prior to teaching at ELS Language Centers, he was a university instructor, teaching writing, interpersonal communication, linguistics, and business English. Chris has also studied at the University of Stuttgart in Germany. He is married with three children. In his spare time, he is a woodworker, photographer, and collector of antique American-made wristwatches.
Kate Palmer
Kate, Instructor, is from Staples, Minnesota. She holds an MA in English from the University of North Dakota. She worked in Ghana, Africa during the summer of 2005 as a teacher to students in the primary and secondary levels. Kate’s hobbies include water skiing, rock climbing and scuba diving.
Kathleen Vacek
Kathleen, Instructor, has taught English language learners in Grand Forks, Minneapolis, the Republic of Georgia, and China since 2005. She earned her MA in English from the University of North Dakota in 2006. Prior to working at ELS, she was an academic advisor at Walden University and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Kathleen served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Georgia. Kathleen’s interests/hobbies include cooking (and of course eating) food from around the world, cycling, hiking.
Jill Hughes
Jill, Instructor, has taught English in a range of settings from high school to adult students in Minnesota. Jill holds a BA in Sociology/Anthropology and Spanish from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa and is currently completing an MA in ESL/Teaching from Hamline University. Jill has taught English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Russia.
