COMING IN 2011
The ELS General English program gives you the opportunity to improve your English by focusing on the skills you will need to communicate well in everyday business and social settings. The four morning classes focus on the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to communicate effectively in English. The two afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes let you apply what you learn in the morning in a communicative and natural context. You have the opportunity to learn more about American culture, improve your vocabulary and use of idioms and conduct meaningful and productive conversations.

Through regularly organized activities you can practice English both in and out of the classroom with native guest speakers or American students discussing various topics.
Music, Voice or Dance Lessons
We can arrange for students to take musical instrument, voice or dance lessons with faculty or qualified students.
College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.
Scholarships/Discounts
After completion of the full ELS Intensive English Program qualified students may receive credit for ELS and/or tuition discounts at select host universities and colleges, once they matriculate.
Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.
Concurrent Enrollment at Host College
ELS students who have received conditional acceptance from the host college/university may have the chance to attend one or more individual college courses (for credit) while still studying in the Intensive English Program.

Center Staff
Joyce Parris
Joyce, Center Director, earned her MS in Language Arts Education from Duquesne University and her MA in Modern Languages and Literature from the University of Pittsburgh where she also earned a certificate in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the Linguistics Department. She has enjoyed a career teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the university level for over 25 years. She became the Director of the ESL Program at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1998 and the Center Director and Academic Director of ELS Language Centers Pittsburgh at Point Park University in 2003. She is a member of NAFSA (National Association of Foreign Student Advisors) as well as a member of TESOL, where she recently co-presented at the 2008 Conference.
Beth DeMont
Beth, MATESL (Saint Michael’s College Vermont) has taught with ELS Language Centers in Pittsburgh since 2006 and became their Senior Instructor in 2008. She is a dedicated educator with international and domestic experience in academic and behavior programs, student assessment and advising, and curricula/materials development. Her scholarship also includes a Psychology BA with minors in philosophy and fine arts from Trinity College of Vermont and Masters work in Counseling at Seton Hill College, Pennsylvania.
Lisa Buchan
Lisa received her M.Ed. in International Education in 2005 from Framingham State College in Massachusetts. She received her B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania in 2003. Lisa has a TEFL certification from Via Lingua in Florence, Italy in 2004 and holds a TESOL certificate from the School for International Training. She taught EFL for two years in Bytom, Poland in a Polish High School/Middle School and taught private Business English Classes to Bank Executives and CEOs. In the US, she worked for two years as an adult counselor. Lisa is currently the Academic Director at ELS Pittsburgh.
Amanda Avampato
Amanda is an ELS Instructor and International Student Advisor (ISA) at the Pittsburgh Center with over 5 years experience, having taught ESL in the public school system before coming to ELS. Amanda has a degree in Education as an ESL Specialist. In addition, she is also a member of TESOL. She enjoys working closely with students, leading and being part of ELS outings and activities.
John Dolence
John , Registrar and DSO, has an Associates Degree in Business Management & Accounting from the University of Pennsylvania. John has previous employment experience as Finance Director & Registrar as well as Accounting, Bookkeeping and Operations Management. He especially enjoys working with International Students.
