Center Information

Our ELS Language Center in Santa Cruz, California is located in the downtown coastal city of Santa Cruz, which is situated on the beautiful marine reserve of Monterey bay, 120 km south of San Francisco, and 50 km from San Jose. Santa Cruz is renowned as the birthplace of California surfing, and is also home to the West Coast’s only seaside amusement park, the famous Santa Cruz Boardwalk. ELS students enjoy access to the libraries and fabulous recreational facilities of the University of California Santa Cruz.

Semi-Intensive English

On-campus Student Residence

Shared typical on campus dorm rooms. Shared bathrooms Rooms include a bed, closet or wardrobe, desk, and chair. Internet access is provided and cable access. Linens are also included. Students clean their own rooms during their stay.

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have their own room and are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Robert Nagel
My name is Robert Nagel and I am the Center Director of ELS Santa Cruz. I graduated from UC Davis with a B.A. degree in English and a minor in East Asian Studies: Japan. After I graduated, I spent seven years teaching in Japan at various companies like Toshiba Corporation and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (Subaru). I also worked in the Silicon Valley for a year as a Content Editor for an entertainment website. I have been with ELS Language centers since 2005 and look forward to meeting and welcoming all of the students that choose to come to our school and hope to get them on the right track towards entering college and fulfilling their future dreams and aspirations!

Varsha Graves
I am the Academic Director at the ELS Language Centers Santa Cruz. Originally from the East Coast, I come from a strong background in International Education, and I have worked in France, Thailand, Japan, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and California. I am delighted to work with such a wonderful group of enthusiastic educators in helping our ELS students develop their academic skills. In my free time, I enjoy hiking and live jazz.

Kelly Williams
Hi! My name is Kelly Williams and I am the International Student Advisor and Registrar for ELS Language Centers in Santa Cruz. I graduated from UC San Diego with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature. After living in both Germany and Japan, I started working for ELS in Berkeley in order to continue meeting wonderful people from other parts of the world. I recently moved to Santa Cruz for the beach, beautiful weather, and laid-back atmosphere. Santa Cruz has a great vibe, with a countless outdoor activities, and a very welcoming community. I look forward to meeting you!
