The ELS General English program gives you the opportunity to improve your English by focusing on the skills you will need to communicate well in everyday business and social settings. The four morning classes focus on the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to communicate effectively in English. The two afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes let you apply what you learn in the morning in a communicative and natural context. You have the opportunity to learn more about American culture, improve your vocabulary and use of idioms and conduct meaningful and productive conversations.

Interested in after-class conversation and friendship with an American student? Inquire after your arrival and we can arrange time with a native speaker.

Through regularly organized activities you can practice English both in and out of the classroom with native guest speakers or American students discussing various topics.
College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.
Scholarships/Discounts
After completion of the full ELS Intensive English Program qualified students may receive credit for ELS and/or tuition discounts at select host universities and colleges, once they matriculate.
Access to Campus Facilities/Services
ELS students may use many of the facilities at our host college/university for free (or low cost) during their studies. Available facilities may vary, but usually include a fitness center, swimming pool, campus library, tennis court, and more.
Concurrent Enrollment at Host College
ELS students who have received conditional acceptance from the host college/university may have the chance to attend one or more individual college courses (for credit) while still studying in the Intensive English Program.
TOEIC Testing Center

Center Staff
Elaine Matyi
Elaine has been at ELS St Paul for 24 years, starting as an instructor. She’s also been Academic Director and then Center Director. Elaine has a Master’s Degree in Education – ESL from The Ohio State University and spent 3 years teaching in Cairo, Egypt.
Bonnie Olson
Hello everyone! I’m the St. Paul Assistant Director/Academic Director. I’ve been here since 1994. Before that I was a teacher in ELS/Denver. I moved here because I’m originally from Minnesota. I love sports, especially skiing, skating, biking, camping, and hiking. Minnesota has lots of places to enjoy these sports. I also love music and theater. My husband and I enjoy a lot of good performances especially because they aren’t so expensive here. Please join us in St. Paul and we’ll show you how to have fun while you learn English.
Ruth Appleton
In August Ruth celebrated 20 years as Registrar at ELS St Paul. Besides her tasks as Registrar, Ruth handles homestay and residence hall housing for St Paul students. Students enjoy visiting with Ruth and often stop by her office to practice speaking English.
Sarah Davis
Sarah, International Student Advisor has taught English as a Second Language to adults in the US as well as teenagers in France where she was a language student herself. She has traveled in Kenya as well as in Europe. She holds a TEFL certificate and has almost completed a Master’s degree in ESL. She enjoys learning about the world through getting to know ELS students, especially as they explore the Twin Cities together!
