Center Staff
Ira Cohen
Center Director: I have always found working with international students a great experience. I have graduate degrees in Slavic Languages and Literatures and have studied several foreign languages…I have lived and worked overseas, Mexico, Iran, Soviet Union, and understand the great benefit study and work abroad can provide. My 35 years of working in ESL as a teacher and administrator have been very rewarding. As Director of ELS San Francisco, I have had the opportunity to meet thousands of great people and come to understand the importance of international cooperation. Seeing our students graduate from ELS and go on to colleges gives me and my staff a great sense of purpose in our day-to-day interaction with students.
Thomas Breckenridge
Academic Director: I have worked for ELS for over 35 years. My ESL career began after graduation from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio when I joined the Peace Corps and taught in Afghanistan. Shortly after returning to the U.S., I began to teach at ELS in Washington, D.C. After teaching for twelve years, I became an Academic Director in 1985. I’ve also worked at ELS centers in Redlands and Oakland, CA, but am now very happily settled in San Francisco.
Ross Thoden
ISA and Registrar: I am originally from a small New Jersey town; my love of languages started there. I majored in a French/European Area Study at American University. While a student, I studied a semester each in Paris and Rome. My first job out of college was teaching ESL in South Korea for two years. That experience led me to my career at ELS, which I began in Central Admissions, then moved onto my current positions in San Francisco.
Roshan Khorshidchehr
IELTS and Housing Administrator: I was born in Bombay, India and graduated in Psychology and Philosophy. I lived in London, UK for 25 years where I started my career in teaching and Management. I worked at the Adult College for 12 years and my last position was a Quality and CPD Manger. I was responsible for 200 part time professional staff with a budget of over $250,000. My “can-do” philosophy and as an individual who is not averse to change and challenge my move to the US was smoother than I thought. I am the only individual who has worked in all ELS East Bay Centers. My current role is of an IELTS Administrator and a Housing Assistant with ELS, San Francisco.
