Testing Services

Students can demonstrate English proficiency by completing the appropriate ELS level. ELS also offers four different tests to help you achieve your English study goals. Different goals require different tests. Read about each below to find which test you will need.

Pre-Arrival Test

Assess your current knowledge of the English language, find out how long you can expect to study at ELS, and learn what ELS programs you are eligible to take. Students take the Pre-Arrival Test (PAT) through qualified ELS counselors before coming to the United States. Your counselor can provide more information.


TOEFL® iBT

What is this test?

This Internet-based test is designed to assess English language skills of non-native speakers.

Who should take it?

Students who wish to pursue studies at a college or university that requires the TOEFL®.


IELTS™ Testing

What is this test?

This paper-based test is available in two forms, depending on your goals: General or Academic. The speaking component of the test is done in person with a live examiner.

Who should take it?

Students who wish to pursue studiesat a college or university that requires the IELTSTM.


TOEIC® Testing

What is this test?

This test is widely accepted by corporations and government agencies around the world as proof of practical English competency.

Who should take it?

Students who work (or hope to work) at companies that require a specific TOEIC® score. This requirementsome times applies to international work assignments. Also, some colleges or universities accept a TOEIC® score as proof of English proficiency for admission purposes.
