What is Conditional Admission?

Institutions in the ELS University Conditional Admission Network offer conditional admission to students who are academically admissible based on the student’s academic record and other university and/or departmental and program requirements, but who have not yet demonstrated English proficiency. Your admission is “conditional” based upon satisfying English proficiency through completion of a specified level of the ELS English for Academic Purposes program and any other specific requirements prior to full admission. Once these requirements are fulfilled, you are able to fully matriculate. These requirements will be outlined on your Conditional Letter of Admission, and your selected ELS center will assist you in completing all of the necessary requirements for matriculation.

Additional matriculation requirements may include other required scores, for example, GMAT® or GRE® for graduate programs.

Our ELS University Partners will offer a Conditional Letter of Admission (CLA) detailing the additional requirements needed for matriculation. You and your family can be assured that you have a university placement and ELS registration prior to departing for the USA.

What is the Conditional Admission Process?

  1. Find a university via our University Finder
  2. Apply for university admission and enroll for English studies at ELS Language Centers with help from a local ELS authorized Counseling Agent.
  3. If you are an acceptable candidate for university admission, you receive a letter of "Conditional university admission subject to English proficiency and submission of any other required documentation for matriculation."
  4. Study at any of the 60 ELS Centers in the USA to fulfill the university entrance requirement for English proficiency.
  5. Begin your university program!

Meet the Staff

Mari McDermott

Mari McDermott

Center Director

Greetings from ELS Language Centers, Berkeley! My name is Mari McDermott and I am the Center Director. My appreciation of different languages, countries, and cultures began at a very young age. While in high school, I participated on my first year-long study abroad program to the Netherlands followed by a semester-long program to Brazil. Upon graduating from San Jose State University with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Portuguese, my passion for second language acquisition and discovering new cultures led me to Japan where I taught English for two years in Tokyo. Upon returning to the U.S., I obtained my M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) from the University of San Francisco and administered USF’s Intensive English Program for eight years. I am passionate about the field of ESL and committed to helping students improve their English for academic, professional, or personal reasons. My staff and I look forward to welcoming you to ELS Berkeley!

Sarah Thomson

Sarah Thomson

Academic Director

Welcome to ELS Berkeley! I am your Academic Director. I love traveling and learning about other cultures (especially food). I studied in Spain, traveled to Switzerland and France, and taught English as a Foreign Language in Mexico. Someday, I hope to visit your country, too! I earned my Master’s degree in Bilingual and ESL Education at Western Illinois University. When I moved to Berkeley in early 2008, I started teaching at ELS Language Center. I became the Academic Director in September 2009 and my favorite part about my job is talking with each of you and helping you learn English in the best ways possible! In my free time I enjoy cooking with my husband, rock climbing with friends, riding my motorcycle, and playing the drums.

Rachel Kassem

Rachel Kassem

International Student Advisor

I'm Rachel, the Student Advisor here at ELS Berkeley. I was born in Canada but I moved to California at a very young age. I first lived in Santa Cruz, then I attended high school in the silicon valley city of Cupertino, and for university I went to UCLA. Before working at ELS, I taught English to international students and groups of business people. Now I organize and lead student activities, tours, and day trips, so I get to take my lessons outdoors! In my spare time, I enjoy hiking in the hills, reading amazing books, trying new restaurants, and going dancing in San Francisco. I love meeting students from all over the world and helping them make the most of their time here in California--there's a lot to see and do! I look forward to meeting you!

Mandisa Cassell

Mandisa Cassell

Registrar

Hello! I’m Mandisa, the language and culture loving Registrar at ELS Berkeley! I am passionate about the study of languages and learning about the different cultures of the world. While studying Political Science and Spanish at Hampton University, I had the amazing opportunity to study in Madrid, Spain. Studying and traveling abroad completely changed my life! Before I came to ELS I was a nurse’s aide, doing hospice work and caring for Alzheimer's and Dementia sufferers. I enjoy discovering new and interesting places, devouring books, listening to reggae music, and spending time with my friends. I love speaking with students about their experiences living abroad and traveling the world and I hope to hear yours one day, too. Welcome!

Monica Steward

Monica Steward

Housing Coordinator

Greetings, my name is Monica and I am the Housing Coordinator. I place students in our two ELS Berkeley dorm housing options: Hillside Hall and Hillside Durant. The Hillside community is a welcoming, engaging group of eclectic students from all over the world. I really enjoy getting the opportunity to see our students become friends and create life-long memories together. Another extremely rewarding and important part of my job is forging relationships between our international students and our American homestay families. I moved to Berkeley six years ago from New Orleans, Louisiana and I love all that Berkeley has to offer! There is an incomparable richness and diversity in our people, food, music and culture. The natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area is unparalleled, and I thoroghly enjoy helping students discover the multitude of sight-seeing and cultural activities. I've taught English for fourteen years and have worked with international students for eight years. Over the years, I've learned a lot from our international students and hope to get the opportunity to share American culture with future ELS students like you.

“I had a strong desire to pursue success in my English, so I chose the ELS center in Berkeley. Here, unquestionably, is a home far from our home, and teachers are like our brothers and sisters. Moreover, they teach us not only the English that we want, but also the attitude we need in the future. Basically, they are our lighthouse to show us the correct direction in our choppy life. Most importantly, the graduation from ELS is not an ending, but a beginning for us to perform on the life stage.”
