ELS/Houston – Clear Lake is located in the beautiful and safe Clear Lake section of Houston, on the campus of the University of Houston – Clear Lake (UHCL). A number of cultural events occur in and near the community, including the Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theatre, the Clear Lake Symphony and the Gulf Coast Film Festival. Students can also enjoy the Kemah Boardwalk (a waterfront attraction with rides, restaurants, shops and other entertainment venues) and a local farmers market. Students have numerous opportunities for outdoor activities including boating, jet skiing, water skiing, fishing, camping, hiking, swimming and kayaking.

Achieve English Proficiency for University Study
Students at ELS- Houston Clear Lake will have the option of living adjacent to campus in apartments with full service kitchens complete with stove, dishwasher, refrigerator and built-in dining/study area. Other features include a swimming pool, sand volleyball court, laundry facility, barbecue pavilion and clubhouse with big screen television. ***Meningitis Vaccination Notification*** All students who plan to live on campus are required to show evidence of being immunized against bacterial meningitis. Student must receive the immunization at least fourteen days prior to taking up residence in on campus housing. Acceptable evidence of vaccination includes one of the following: "A letter that indicates the month, day, and year of the immunization with the signature stamp of the physician or his/her designee;" or "An official immunization record generated from a local health department translated in English." Please submit evidence of your immunization to the center (hcl@els.edu) for processing. This documentation must be received two weeks before your arrival. If this documentation is not received two weeks prior to student's arrival, it may be delay the entry in to campus housing.

On Friday, April 13th, the students of ELS/Houston-Clear Lake took a trip to an NBA game to see the professional basketball team of Houston (the Rockets) play against the Phoenix Suns. The Rockets kept it at a tight game and almost beat the Suns! 10 lucky ELS students were chosen to go onto the court sidelines when the team was warming up. Go Rockets!

ELS Houston-Clear Lake holds a college meeting one day every session. This session ELS welcomed Alan Clipperton - Associate Vice President for International Admissions for LeTourneau University - a university within the ELS network that offers Conditional Acceptance and accepts ELS levels 109 and 112.

On Saturday, March 17th, ELS visited the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. (www.hlsr.com) It was a great opportunity to meet Americans and to witness rodeo culture! Students enjoyed the carnival rides, wonderful food, exhibits, shows, and the Championships of the rodeo events of bull-dogging, bucking bronco riding, bull riding, barrel racing, and more. Two lucky students got special seats right next to the action! We can't wait until next year!

Every year the City of Houston celebrates Go Texan Day, where residents are encouraged to dress in western wear the Friday before the rodeo begins. ELS students celebrated Go Texan Day by learning the "Two-Step" - a traditional Texas social dance.

This session ELS welcomed Andy Kabasele - Associate Director of International Admissions for our host institution, the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Mr. Kabasele speaks with each student about their future university goals and how they can obtain them.

On Tuesday, February 21st, ELS celebrated Mardi Gras with the traditional treat of King Cake! 2 plastic babies were hidden within the slices of cake and the lucky students who found them got free tickets to the rodeo when ELS goes in Session 3! Congrats Amal and Natalie! Laissez les bons temps rouler!

On Sunday, February 12th, the students of ELS Houston-Clear Lake took a trip to the Houston Zoo. The Houston Zoo is a 55-acre (22 ha) zoological park that houses over 6,000 animals belonging to over 900 species. It has 1.6 million visitors each year, making it the seventh most visited zoo in the nation.

On Friday, January 27th, the students of ELS/Houston-Clear Lake took a trip to an NBA game to see the professional basketball team of Houston (the Rockets) play against the Washington Wizards. The Rockets won with 102 points against 76 points for the Wizards. ELS got lucky and was chosen to move to some of the best seats in the stadium! Go Rockets!

On Tuesday, January 17th, the students of ELS Houston-Clear Lake took a trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. This is one of the most popular museums in the United States and ranks just below New York City's American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco, in most attendance amongst non-Smithsonian museums.

On Friday, January 20th, ELS invited our American friend Brian Keur to teach any interested ELS students how to shoot a basketball and how to play the sport. Everyone improved their skills and we even started a basketball game. Now we will know how the players feel when we go to the NBA game on January 27th!

Calling All Merit Scholars! We are proud to present our ELS 50th Anniversary University Tuition Scholarship in celebration of Fifty (50) Years of ELS Leadership in International Education.
If you meet the minimum grade point average (GPA) and several other requirements, ELS will award 50 percent of your ELS Language Centers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tuition. The ELS 50th Anniversary University Tuition Scholarship will be paid directly into your student account at the ELS Host Institution or AEC member that issued your CLA, making the process simple and official.
