Wall Hall, a female-only dorm, is located on the southwest side of the Texas Tech Campus. Wall Hall features TV rooms, study lounges, vending rooms, kitchenettes and limitless laundry facilities with Wi-Fi.

What is Conditional Admission?

Institutions in the ELS University Conditional Admission Network offer conditional admission to students who are academically admissible based on the student’s academic record and other university and/or departmental and program requirements, but who have not yet demonstrated English proficiency. Your admission is “conditional” based upon satisfying English proficiency through completion of a specified level of the ELS English for Academic Purposes program and any other specific requirements prior to full admission. Once these requirements are fulfilled, you are able to fully matriculate. These requirements will be outlined on your Conditional Letter of Admission, and your selected ELS center will assist you in completing all of the necessary requirements for matriculation.

Additional matriculation requirements may include other required scores, for example, GMAT® or GRE® for graduate programs.

Our ELS University Partners will offer a Conditional Letter of Admission (CLA) detailing the additional requirements needed for matriculation. You and your family can be assured that you have a university placement and ELS registration prior to departing for the USA.

What is the Conditional Admission Process?

  1. Find a university via our University Finder
  2. Apply for university admission and enroll for English studies at ELS Language Centers with help from a local ELS authorized Counseling Agent.
  3. If you are an acceptable candidate for university admission, you receive a letter of "Conditional university admission subject to English proficiency and submission of any other required documentation for matriculation."
  4. Study at any of the 60 ELS Centers in the USA to fulfill the university entrance requirement for English proficiency.
  5. Begin your university program!

Center Director

Liz came to Lubbock after living in Taiwan for 10 years. She started teaching English as a Second Language in 2001 and was the Director of an English school in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for over 7 years. Liz has a long-standing connection to the international student community, serving as teacher, administrator and host family. She has travelled to over 30 countries and loves making connections with people from all over the world!

Zachary D. Hausrath

Zachary D. Hausrath

Academic Director

Zachary Hausrath is the Academic Director. He holds a Masters of Education in Literacy and Second Language Studies as well as a certificate of Postsecondary Literacy Instruction from the University of Cincinnati. He lived and worked in several countries as a student, teacher and administrator before joining ELS Cincinnati in 2011. He looks forward to growing the community in Lubbock!

Kymberli May

International Student Advisor

Kymberli is a native Texan and graduate of Texas Tech University. While in college, she studied abroad and visited many different countries. She has worked with both American and International students while teaching and advising at the university. She greatly enjoys learning about other cultures and helping students through their academic journeys. Kymberli has been in Lubbock for 9 years, so she knows a lot about the community and what it has to offer!

Kathy Merkley


Kathy has had the opportunity to live in and visit many different places, such as Okinawa, Ecuador, Mexico and almost every state in the US. Family is very important to Kathy. She is the mother of two daughters and a grandmother of two grandsons. She moved to Lubbock eight years ago to be near her oldest daughter. She enjoys cooking, gardening, reading and learning about other cultures.

Being a part of ELS family was one of the best experiences that I have ever had. Teachers and staffs have always been there to help us. They taught us how to improve our language skills, how to use English on a daily basis. They have been supporting us all the time. Studying at ELS Lubbock is a great opportunity for learning English.

Session 3 Award Ceremony

ABC Pro Rodeo

Students experienced some true Texas culture on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at the ABC Pro Rodeo, one of Lubbock's favorite events. Students saw professional bull riding, calf roping, and barrel racing. Yeehaw!

Going Away Party

Academic Director Zack Hausrath spent his last day at ELS/Lubbock celebrating and saying goodbye to the students and staff. Zack will be heading north to be the Academic Director at ELS/Chicago. Good luck Zack!

Roller Derby

On Saturday, March 15, 2014, around 40 ELS students, teachers, and staff went to support the West Texas Roller Dollz and two of our great teachers on the team. Everyone had a fantastic time, and the Dollz won the bout!

West Texas Accountability Project Presentation

February 27, 2014

During Week 3, SSP students in levels 101, 104, 105, and 109 got to enjoy a special presentation by a Leann Lamb-Vines, a member of the West Texas Accountability Project. Leann gave the students valuable information on the City of Lubbock's oil and drilling regulations and how they affect residents of the city and county. Students were also given a chance to ask some great questions to our guest speaker.

Decorate Your Own Cookie Birthday Celebration

On February 25, 2014, ELS/Lubbock celebrated Session 2 birthdays by decorating cookies! Students had a great time putting icing and sprinkles on their cookie to make it their very own. Happy birthday!

Fashion Show in SSP Class

On February 24, 2014, SSP teacher Dr. Ingrid Graves hosted a fashion show for her students. Students described each other's appearance and dress in order to utilize the new descriptive vocabulary they recently learned.

Movie Trip to See "RoboCop"

On February 22, 2014, ELS/Lubbock took a trip to Tinseltown Movie Theater to see the new hit movie "RoboCop." The movie is a re-make of a 1987 movie about a half-man/half-robot police officer fighting crime in Detroit!

Severe Weather Presentation

Local meteorologist John Robison joined us on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, to give a special weather presentation. Students learned about severe weather that affects our area and how to keep themselves safe at home and at school. Thanks John!

Traditional Chinese Market

To continue the Lunar New Year celebration, students at ELS/Lubbock joined the Texas Tech Chinese Association on Friday, February 7, 2014, for a traditional Chinese market with food, games, and Chinese writing. The students had a great time learning about the Chinese culture!

Introduction to the Peking Opera

On Friday, January 31, 2014, Texas Tech University Chinese Association kicked off the Lunar New Year Celebration with an Introduction to the Peking Opera. ELS students learned about the music, movements, makeup, and expression of this cultural art form.

Students gathered on January 31, 2014 to celebrate all of the accomplishments during Session 1. Students earned raffle tickets throughout the session for using English outside of the classroom, and a special prize drawing was held. The lucky winner won a Kindle Fire! Congratulations Students!

We had a great time celebrating Session 1 birthdays at ELS/Lubbock! On January 27, 2014 students gathered for a Karaoke party in the student lounge. Students took turns on the microphone to sing some awesome pop hits. Even some staff joined in the fun! Happy birthday students!

Texas Tech Police Safety Presentation

On January 15, 2014, ELS/Lubbock welcomed some special guests to our Center. The Texas Tech Police Department joined us for a special presentation about safety awareness and theft prevention. Students learned valuable information about their rights and what to do in an emergency situation.

Mall Shopping Trip

Students got out their wallets to do a little after-Christmas shopping! On Saturday, January 11, 2014 ELS/Lubbock went to the South Plains Mall and had a great time hanging out together while doing a little shopping.

Bowling and Laser Tag at Main Event

To celebrate finals week, students went to Main Event Lubbock on January 2, 2014. Because it was the last day of class, students were able to enjoy bowling, laser tag, and arcade games free of homework or school stress!

Session 13 Birthday Celebration

On Monday, December 30, 2013, students gathered to celebrate all the birthdays during Session 13. Students had a great time eating cake and snacks, all while dancing and playing some video games on the Wii!

Santa Land

On December 23, 2013, students went to the North Pole to see Santa Land! This yearly tradition in Lubbock features a festive holiday village and 60-foot lighted Christmas Tree, as well as holiday carols and displays.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie trip

On opening day, November 22, 2013, students from ELS went to see The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Many of the students reported that they read the books, so this was a great treat for them!

Students celebrated Halloween all day at ELS/Lubbock. Many students wore costumes to class, including zombies, superheroes, animals, and many more! After class was over, students gathered for a spooky good time at a Halloween party full of tricks and treats!

Students gathered on October 28, 2013, to begin celebrating Halloween with a pumpkin carving party. Students worked in teams to cut, carve, and paint jack-o-lanterns to put on display during Halloween week festivities.

Texas Tech University Women's Volleyball

On October 23, 2013, ELS went to watch some NCAA women's volleyball action as the Texas Tech team took on New Mexico. Students had a great time cheering on the Red Raiders!

Corn Maize

October 31, 2013

On October 18, 2013, ELS took a group of 25 to At’l Do Farms for one of Lubbock’s most cherished fall events – the Corn Maize! Students tested their skills through the twists and turns of the maze, which this year celebrated the beloved movie classic “The Wizard of Oz.”
