ELS/Santa Barbara is located in downtown Santa Barbara, a friendly town on the Southern California coast. The Inn in Santa Barbara is located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. Students can enjoy comfortable, independent living in this classic downtown hotel! Hotel is 10-minute walk from the beach and 15-minute walk from ELS, near hundreds of cafes, restaurants and shops. Rooms have private bathrooms, free WI-Fi, weekly maid service, and access to laundry machines.

Host family students are responsible for their personal transportation. Most students travel to the Center by bus or by bicycle. Most families are no more than 30 minutes or less from ELS. Students will be placed in either a single room or double room depending on which is available.

Center Director
Michael studied liberal arts, then earned his MBA from Oklahoma City University. He joined ELS in 2007 and served as Center Director at ELS/Oklahoma City and at ELS/Shanghai. His hobbies include kayaking, running on the beach, and hiking Santa Barbara's lush forests and mountains. Michael enjoys introducing students to Santa Barbara and the city's arts, outdoor activities and social clubs.
Academic Director
Gigi has a Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Maryland and a TESOL Professional Certificate from UC Santa Barbara Extension. Gigi grew up in Europe and has been teaching ESL and German since 1992; she has been with ELS Language Centers since 2008. Gigi enjoys traveling, walking her dogs and going to cultural events. Gigi looks forward to getting to know new students!
International Student Advisor
Lisa studied French and Business at Westmont College, where she had the opportunity to study abroad in Southern France. After finishing college, Lisa returned to France for 2 years and worked with students from all around the world. Lisa continued to work with international students when she returned to the U.S. and joined ELS in 2011. Lisa enjoys living in beautiful Santa Barbara. She helps students with housing and activities, so they can make the most of their time at ELS!
Registrar
Logan studied Statistics at the University of California in Santa Barbara, where he also learned Russian and Spanish. He likes to travel to other countries, especially Eastern Europe, and enjoys meeting the fellow travelers at ELS. Logan likes to camp on the Channel Islands and play soccer.
Instructor
Chris has taught English for 14 years. He began teaching English in Holland and currently enjoys teaching at ELS Santa Barbara. Chris is a California native and enjoys surfing, reading, and writing. Chris likes teaching students of all levels and specializes in teaching iBT TOEFL Preparation. He gets great satisfaction from seeing his students progress and succeed.
Instructor
Louis studied art at San Francisco State University, then went on to earn his TEFL Certificate. Louis has been with ELS Language Centers since 2005, and taught English in Japan for several years. Louis enjoys biking around Santa Barbara and playing soccer with our students.
Instructor
Mary has lived in Santa Barbara for 28 years. Originally from Kansas, she finds Santa Barbara an interesting and multicultural place to live. After raising a family, Mary returned to school and pursued a TESOL certificate. In her free time, Mary enjoys entertaining guests and cooking. She and her husband travel to Haiti yearly to care for the medical needs of people living there.
Instructor
Deborah Cooke graduated with a degree in English from San Francisco State University, where she also received her California teaching credential. She went on to receive her TESOL certificate. She has been teaching English as a Second Language for more than 20 years. Deborah loves world travel and meeting people from other cultures.
Instructor
Matthew is originally from Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 2004 with a degree in finance. Matthew has lived and traveled extensively throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Central and South America. He recently returned from a year teaching English in Argentina. Matthew loves to be outdoors and enjoys camping, hiking, and riding his bike.

The ELS Language Center in Santa Barbara is the best environment for you to learn English and to learn more about the cultures of countries all around the world. The classes are great and the teachers as well, but the opportunity to make friendships with students from Asia, Europe, South America and other continents is the most fantastic experience that you can enjoy in this Paradise City, where you will feel like you are home!
This is a unique opportunity in your life; you’ll go back to your country speaking English and with friends from many nationalities. The city is perfect, you can find every thing that you want, and if you can’t, I’m sure that the Directors from the school will be glad to help you, just like they helped me. I’m really interested in spending more time here, and if you come, you will feel the same way, I bet.
So stop looking for other courses or other cities and come to the ELS Language Center in Santa Barbara. You won’t regret it.

Calling All Merit Scholars! We are proud to present our ELS 50th Anniversary University Tuition Scholarship in celebration of Fifty (50) Years of ELS Leadership in International Education.
If you meet the minimum grade point average (GPA) and several other requirements, ELS will award 50 percent of your ELS Language Centers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tuition. The ELS 50th Anniversary University Tuition Scholarship will be paid directly into your student account at the ELS Host Institution or AEC member that issued your CLA, making the process simple and official.
Contact an ELS-authorized Counseling Agent, who will ensure that you follow the admissions process properly, meeting all scholarship terms and conditions. Participating ELS university partners are as follows:

ELS provides a full range of English training programs, as well as pathways to over 40 institutions in Australia, including prestigious and popular institutions like Macquarie University, University of Western Sydney, University of Newcastle, University of Wollongong, TAFE New South Wales and Le Cordon Bleu.
