My name is Abdulrahman Albassam, I am from Saudi Arabia. I studied English at ELS on the campus of California Lutheran University (CLU) and then transferred to the undergraduate program to study Computer Information System. ELS was a pathway towards my education goal. The transition was very easy as I already knew a lot about the campus and community. The people at CLU are very friendly and the campus has a lot of diversity. I have really enjoyed my time here.

Hi, I am Han Seung Woo from Korea. My friends call me H. I do love studying at ELS Thousand Oaks. Thousand Oaks is a beautiful place to live and travel. If you are studying at ELS Thousand Oaks you can use the many facilities on the California Lutheran University campus such as the gym, swimming pool, basketball court and library. Every Monday and Friday we play baseball and soccer with ELS and CLU students. Also every Monday we can go to Conversation Café. These opportunities allow us to talk with CLU students and Americans so that we can improve our English ability. I am really thankful to the ELS center for giving me those chances.

The most important part of learning English is to speak it again and again. I didn’t have the chance to speak English in my country, but now that I am studying at ELS Thousand Oaks I have to speak in English every day. ELS Thousand Oaks is a good place to study the city is safe, beautiful and quiet. You can focus on your school life. I have met a lot of good friends.

When I was in Taiwan the agency suggested that I choose California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks for my graduate studies. I did not know anything about Thousand Oaks or even where it was, so I was nervous. When I arrived and began my English studies at ELS I felt more comfortable. There are people from other countries and you get to speak English everyday with them, and it helps you to improve. Other than studying English, I like to play basketball with my friends at the California Lutheran University gym. I really like studying at ELS, T.O.

I decided to come to ELS Thousand Oaks because of the length of sessions. Each session is about a month long, and I can finish the entire program is less than one year. When you finish (graduate from level 112 EAP course) you have a lot of universities that will accept your certificate in lieu of a TOEFL or IELTS score.

In China, I didn’t have the opportunity to speak English. But now I have to think about everything in English, because there is a rule at ELS Thousand Oaks ---“English Only!” It is very tough, but it is very helpful for every student. Although I just speak with some simple sentences and simple words, I still feel very happy because I know that I am progressing every day. ELS arranges a lot of activities every week such as conversation café which is conversations with native speakers, trips to public library, trips to museums, and watching movies. These activities create natural environments to access the native culture and language. The teachers at ELS love education, so they are always enthusiastic. I feel ELS is like a big family. We help each other and work hard for the same goal.

I like to study at ELS because it is a friendly and warm atmosphere. The contents of the English program are clear and organized. Also I think that one of the best parts at ELS is the teachers. The teachers are polite, respectful, and most importantly reliable. The students can always ask for help and they will not give you the solution, they will teach you how you can find it. I love to study at ELS, and it has become my second home.

The reason I chose ELS Thousand Oaks is because the city is a very safe city, and the weather is really good. Also Thousand Oaks is near Los Angeles, and is convenient for my life. ELS has helped me to enter graduate school. The teachers and administrators are very patient. They helped me with English, and any other problems I face. I have enjoyed the SSP class a lot, because I learned new vocabulary and grammar. My second favorite class was Reading and Writing, it helped me improve my reading speed and I also learned new words. Out of the classroom I enjoy playing basketball in the CLU gym. The gym is pretty new and perfect for all students! I have met new friends by playing basketball each day, and it keeps me healthy!
Spring is a time for new beginnings, and January 18th is the first day of the Spring Semester at Cal Lutheran University! The holidays have come and gone, but now it’s time for Cal Lutheran students to come back from winter break. Once again, the campus will be bustling with students going to classes, hanging out with friends, or participating in school events. Here at ELS, we are excited to welcome back CLU students for an exciting semester! There are so many ways students at ELS find to interact with CLU students to learn about American culture and practice English.
On Mondays, from 4:00-5:00, students can stop by Conversation Café to meet with CLU students and community members who want to sit and chat with international students. It’s a great place to come, practice speaking, and make friends! CLU is also looking forward to a very busy sports season. Attending a basketball game in school colors is an awesome way to be involved in the campus community and support the university! CLU also sponsors several festivals throughout the semester that are a great way to meet people and enjoy the awesome Southern California weather. Whether you are on campus dining at the cafeteria, working out at the gym, or hanging out with friends at Kingsmen Park on campus, there will be tons of opportunities to meet American students and form relationships that will last a lifetime.
