I’m from Tokyo but I don’t like really big cities, so Portland is perfect for me! It’s a green city with a lot of natural areas. Even though I’m a stranger here, everyone talks with me. It’s easy to make friends. I go snowboarding in the mountains almost every weekend, and during the week I can play basketball in the gym or outside at a park.

When I visited Portland 5 years ago, I knew that I wanted to come back to study some day. And now my dream has come true! I’m having a lot of fun at ELS/Portland. I’ve made lots of new friends from all different countries- including the United States! I’ve visited Mt. Hood and I go shopping downtown all the time. There’s no sales tax, so it’s not too expensive. In class, my teachers always encourage students to speak, so I can improve my English every day.

I love the city of Portland. The weather is really nice and the people here are friendlier than in other big cities I’ve visited. When I came to ELS I had zero English, but now my English has really improved! The teachers here help me with anything and I think the class schedule is perfect. My Reading and Writing, and Structure and Speaking classes teach me everything I need to know. I plan to finish ELS level 112, and then study for my Masters degree in the United States.

The activities at ELS Portland help me meet other students. I didn’t feel lonely or homesick at all. The students are very kind and we hang out with each other. My favorite party was a Halloween party. I wore a mask and many other students wore costumes. We played a lot of games. I also volunteered at a children’s Halloween party in the community. The American children were so cute. They all wanted to talk to me!
