Dreah Stratton

Dreah Stratton

Instructor

Dreah first began teaching English to Chinese students at a language institute in Shanghai called New World Education in 2005. After a few years, she decided to continue her education and began an M.A. in TESOL in 2008 at Azusa Pacific University. Upon finishing her Masters, the multiculturalism at Azusa Pacific inspired her to apply to teach at ELS San Diego. The opportunity to expand beyond Chinese students and work with language learners from around the world presented at once a new challenge and an exciting opportunity. Moreover, it has inspired her to travel. In addition to exploring the United States extensively, she has visited Germany and Thailand and plans to continue to explore worldwide. One thing she particularly likes about teaching is it that is has made her more outgoing. People, she believes, see her as an extrovert when in reality she considers herself an introvert. Indeed, Dreah is an early bird, waking up often before the sun has risen to workout, watch the news, read the bible, or just generally cherish the peace and solitude of the early morning.

Andrea Decamp

Andrea Decamp

Registrar

Andrea feels that her life has defied her own expectations. She received her undergraduate degree from Long Beach State University in English Education in 2009. Inspired by her own teachers, she envisioned herself one day teaching high school. Indeed, she fell in love with British literature, in particular Romantic poets like E.B. Browning and Robert Browning. Nevertheless, in 2010 she was offered the position of Administrative Assistant at ELS San Diego. Although it was not a teaching role, she wanted to be in an educational environment and particularly liked the care she felt ELS shows its employees. Quickly, she was promoted to her current position of Registrar. Although she had not foreseen herself working in finance, she truly loves what she does for the exposure she has to students from all around the world. In a job that on the surface would seem routine or mundane, the diverse cultural backgrounds of the students makes her job especially interesting and always presents her with a new challenge. Similar in age to many ELS students, she relates to their youthfulness. Her free-spiritedness is best expressed in her love of camping, sleeping outside, and looking up at the stars.

Aubree Gold

Aubree Gold

IELTS Administrator

After graduating from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Marketing and Business, she began working first as an IELTS administrative assistant at International House in San Diego and later transitioned into the role of Registrar. In 2009, she moved to ELS San Diego, where she now oversees the entire IELTS operation. She enjoys her IELTS team members, and she takes great satisfaction in helping students achieve their higher educational goals. In working with international students, she believes she is helping make the U.S. a better place by fostering multiculturalism. Outside of work, she has devoted herself so completely to her passion for sailing that she lives full-time on a sailboat in the San Diego Harbor.

Gabriella Archambeau

Gabriella Archambeau

Instructional Specialist

Gabriella, a Philadelphian, was awarded a full scholarship to a private college in Boston, MA, where she earned her B.S. and teaching credential in English Literature and Theatre Education. In San Diego, she taught creative writing, voice and articulation, drama, and directed plays as she continued to study Shakespeare and classical acting at the Old Globe Theatre. She began teaching ESL in 1988 and loves teaching international students. Her blend of artistic and technical skills creates a classroom that is structured and lively. Gabriella also coordinates the ELS Volunteer Program with projects such as: Toys for Tots, City of Refuge, Earth day and the popular monthly activity of serving lunch to the homeless at Father Joe's. Currently she enjoys: piano, singing, writing, and cooking ethnic food for friends and family. She looks forward to more traveling, Italy first (birthplace of her grandparents), but needs to find a benefactor and experienced cat sitter.

Ann Marie Groffner

Ann Marie Groffner

Student Advisor

Ann Marie decided to travel to Brazil in 2002, and it is here that she began teaching English and acquired her Portuguese. She has always felt inspired to travel, beginning with her study abroad program in Ecuador as an undergraduate. She received her B.A. in Philosophy and Environmental Studies. Ann Marie began teaching at ELS San Diego in 2007, where she began as a teacher and transitioned into her current role of International Student Advisor. Her favorite aspect of the job is assisting students with their educational goals; she has seen many students go from having no English abilities to being accepted into a four-year university program. She also enjoys introducing students to all the wonderful activities that San Diego has to offer. Although she has many passions from surfing to dancing, her number one priority is her family and her role as a mother.

Lisa Baker

Lisa Baker

Administrative Assistant

Lisa began working at ELS San Diego in April of 2011. She plays many roles from administrative assistant to IELTS invigilator. On the weekend, she teaches kids ages six to eleven at a church program. She was attracted to ELS for its international flavor. Indeed, her passion for travel has taken her around the world from Italy to Egypt, from the Philippines to Israel--her all-time favorite destination. She thoroughly enjoys learning about the students and their varied backgrounds and lifestyles. In her free time, she participates in mission trips, including humanitarian work, like building homes for the poor in Mexico.

Phil Sasso

Phil Sasso

Instructional Specialist

Phil's extensive career in teaching English goes all the way back to 1987 when he first began teaching at ELS San Diego. He received his B.A. in German Literature from the University of California, Berkley and followed up with a certificate to teach ESL from San Diego State University. He has worked in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. His favorite vacation destination is Bali, which was both his last big vacation and his next big vacation. At ELS, he enjoys organizing field trips for the students to Balboa Park and La Jolla Cove. His favorite pastimes include international politics, swimming, and gardening.

Kristin Young

Kristin Young

Instructor

Kristin started teaching English at 19, while still a college student. Since then, she has completed her degree in Elementary Education, with a minor in Spanish, and has finished her Master's degree in Special Education, with an emphasis on bilingual strategies. She also has an applied linguistics certificate from San Diego State University and spent a year teaching English in Taiwan. Kristen has a border collie named Woogie and loves cooking, eating, movies, books and roller coasters.

Christine Fallon

Christine Fallon

Instructor

Christine is an experienced and well-qualified English teacher. Christine, a native San Diegan, has a BA in Speech Communication from San Diego State University, an M.Ed in TESOL from Temple University Japan and a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in English. She taught English in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in the JET Program from 1998-2001. Christine began working for ELS in 2005. She's fluent in Japanese and has two beautiful daughters.

Jim Revak

Jim Revak

Instructor

Jim has been with ELS since 2005 and has taught English and public speaking since 1994. He holds the Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and has been certified as a TOEFL iBT instructor by the Educational Testing Service. He holds the Toastmaster Gold designation for public speaking from Toastmasters International. Jim has previously worked as a marketing research consultant and holds a master's degree in marketing from San Diego State University. In addition, he has taught music appreciation for the San Diego Opera and has a bachelor's degree in music from Rutgers University.

Briana Weeger

Briana Weeger

Instructor

Briana first began teaching English as a volunteer in 2008 in the far-away land of Ghana, Africa. This experience led her to continue teaching when she returned home to the University of California, San Diego. In 2010, she transitioned into the role of Student Advisor at ELS San Diego. In 2011, her responsibilities include a mix of time in the classroom and coordinating student housing. She believes that good housing for ELS students is essential for their quality of life. In 2012, Briana became a full-time instructor. Improving the study abroad experience for students, in Briana’s own words, “Brings a smile to my face.” Her undergraduate degree was in English Literature at the University of California, Los Angeles. She loves reading literature for the reason that it represents life, not as black or white, but in all of its shades of gray. Her travels in life have also taken her to Australia and Spain. As an open-minded, native Californian, she loves learning about different cultures and meeting the students.

Lorraine Pacheco

Lorraine Pacheco

Instructor

Lorraine started working with ESL students as a bilingual, public-elementary-school teacher over 15 years ago. Her practical experience in teaching is rooted in her B.A. in Music Education from Metropolitan State College and her M.A. in English with an emphasis in TESOL from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. Her love of travel is expressed by her study abroad experience at the University of Lancaster, England in addition to her years as a flight attendant--Prague, Cypress, Kuwait, Germany, Ireland, and Budapest being her most memorable destinations. Today, between reading books, watching movies, creative writing projects, and spending time with her pets, she doesn’t have time to be bored. Her life philosophy is to live with a spirit of gratitude, forgiveness, and love.

Andy Ball

Andy Ball

Instructor

Andy began working with ESL students in Japan in 1999. He received his B.A. from Hope College and did a summer research program at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo. He is continuing his education at Northwestern University where he seeks an M.S. in Education Policy. Born in the U.K., he has had the good fortune to travel much of Europe and especially France due to his parents' love of the country. Building upon his childhood experiences, he has learned that traveling ought to be a process of removing the blinders and social filters put into place by society and enabling us to free our creativity and to understand the world. He applies these ideas to the classroom where he believes that every student, every person, has something to offer. He believes that the root of one’s confidence must be analyzed and questioned; such a notion is congruent with the belief that listening to others and utilizing introspection is critical for human development. Most importantly, Andy never forgets his sense of humor and enjoys his life to the fullest.

Tamia Dowlatabadi

Tamia Dowlatabadi

Instructor

Tamia started at ELS San Diego in May of 2010. Her undergraduate education consisted of a major in Russian Language and Literature with a minor in Music. She went on to receive her TESOL training from the U.S. Peace Corps, Berlitz International, and the University of California, San Diego. She's taught English in Turkey, Russia, and the U.S. Tamia finds it especially rewarding to see students who come into her class barely able to speak a word of English and then, within just a few months, confidently able to communicate. She is defined by her love of travel; indeed, she has visited fifty countries: her favorite destinations including Central Asia, Nepal, and Peru. One day, she'd like to visit Bhutan, Myanmar, Mali, Egypt, India, and Mongolia. Having traveled so many places, she can honestly say that San Diego is one of the finest cities she's ever lived in. She has lived here with her wonderful husband whom she met in Istanbul for seven years. On a typical day, she might enjoy playing music (harp, kanun, and guitar), hiking, or writing.

Paul Clarke

Paul Clarke

Instructor

Paul first began teaching English in 1990 to business people in Japan, where he continued to live on and off over the next eleven years. He received his undergraduate degree in Accounting, and he expects to receive his M.A. in Applied Linguistics/TESOL by the end of 2011. In class, he believes that lessons are far more interesting for students if they do the majority of the talking: “After all,” he says, “I've had plenty of experience practicing my English since I was born and shouldn't spend class time preventing my students from getting the practice they need.”

Frank Ingoglia

Frank Ingoglia

Instructor

Frank's ESL teaching career began in Boston, Massachusetts in 1995. As an undergraduate, he received a B.A. in Linguistics before going on to complete his M.A. in TESL. His world travels have taken him to diverse destinations: from Germany, France, Spain, Holland, Greece, and Italy in Europe to Canada and Mexico around North America. Frank's favorite aspect of teaching English is two-fold: imparting the various nuances of language, such as is found in its grammar and vocabulary, on his students and learning about them as unique individuals.

Becky Randall-Owens

Becky Randall-Owens

Instructor

Becky began her career in teaching English in Madrid, Spain, where she received her TEFL Certificate in 2005. Teaching was an instant joy for her, and upon returning to the U.S., she completed her M.A. in TESOL in 2009, building upon her B.A. in Anthropology and International Affairs. Her love of travel and language is rooted in her experience as an international exchange student in Costa Rica during her senior year of high school. As an undergraduate, she had additional opportunities to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain and in Strasbourg, France. Indeed, Becky has traveled widely throughout Europe and Central America and, now, has her heart set upon New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. Born in New Hampshire, she utilizes opportunities unique to San Diego like hiking, riding bikes, doing yoga, and reading books at the beach.

Diane Singer

Diane Singer

Instructor

Diane Singer has been at ELS for two years and loves working with the students here. In her former life she was a high school English teacher, a race-relations facilitator, and an antiques storeowner. Diane has a Masters in Social Work and a CELTA Certificate from Cambridge University. She is an IELTS examiner and test preparation teacher. Her favorite person is her dog Max. She believes that in order to receive information in the brain, you must smile a lot.

Brian Pound

Brian Pound

Instructor

Brian’s first contact with ELS Language Centers was through a friend and teacher who invited him to a conversation class at ELS in 1994. It instantly drew him into teaching as a career, and already having credentials and having taught in public school, he quickly found a full-time teaching position. Brian’s educational background spans many years and many fields, from history to psychology, from art to English. In 1997, his teaching career was briefly sidetracked by pursuit in computer programming. However, he craved the contact he once had with international students and gave up the high salary for the satisfaction that working at ELS provides. Brian has traveled far and wide: Mexico, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Peru. He would like to see China, Ghana, Thailand, and Italy. He divides his free time between his love of music (flute and drums), his passion for art, and his dogs.

Carolyn Nutovic

Carolyn Nutovic

Instructor

Carolyn began working with ESL students in a middle school in Tenafly, New Jersey, where she taught grades six through eight for five years. She received her B.A. in Social Sciences from Northeastern University in Boston and then followed up with an M.A. in Education specializing in TESOL from Farleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ. Before beginning at ELS San Diego in 2011, Carolyn taught adolescents through adults in public school, community college, private language schools, and in business settings. In fact, she has taught at ELS Language Centers a total of three separate times. She has lived in Africa and the Middle East and has traveled through Europe and Latin America. She would love to visit Australia and Asia one day.

Kat Guilino

Kat Guilino

Instructor

Unofficially, Kat began teaching English at age four. Born in Colombia, and speaking English from a young age, it was naturally expected that she would help family and friends learn English as well. But officially, Kat began teaching English in Japan in 2008 after receiving her B.A. in International Security and Conflict Resolution. An avid traveler, she has also visited places like Italy, Turkey, and Morocco. In 2011, she took the job at ELS San Diego because she believes this school meets her standards of a high-quality learning environment. Indeed, as English is Kat's second language (Spanish first, Italian third), she strongly identifies with her students in terms of what it’s like to learn a foreign language, not to mention doing so as an adult. In her free time, she is most passionate about hiking, dancing, yoga, and cooking.

Stephen Bolotin

Stephen Bolotin

Instructor

Steve did not find the career of teaching; it found him. As an undergraduate student at Skidmore College in New York, he found himself consumed by a single question: why have some of his favorite novelists chosen to publish in English although it is not their first language. His undergraduate research took him across the world and gradually he came to realize that English has the unique capacity to be adapted to nearly any purpose. Naturally, Steve found himself tutoring foreign exchange students at Skidmore, and after graduating in 2007, he eventually took a teaching gig at ELS Seattle. He did a brief stint at ELS Portland in 2008 and settled down at ELS San Diego in 2009, where he remains happily today. Ultimately, he is most attached to the daily dose multiculturalism which teaching English entails. He considers himself a citizen of the world and believes deeply in the power that sharing cross-cultural perspectives has on the betterment of humanity as a whole. Travel, in his certain opinion, is the best form of education there is.

Nicolò Mardegan, Italy

8月 10, 2009

I think that ELS school is one of the best in the world. I have been in San Diego three months and I can't miss that time. I have improved my English thanks to a smart method. The teachers are friendly and competent. San Diego is wonderful: you can do everything and mostly you can meet a lot of young people from the world. Actually after this experience I have a lot of friends and with us I speak english often on Facebook, Skype or telephone. In the future I will visit their countries. Some of them yet visited my beautiful country: Italy!! So I invite you to study English in ELS - San Diego.Ciao.Nicolò
