American Explorer

English for Executives

The English for Executives Program consists of three 50-minutes interactive group lessons and three personalized, 50-minute one-to-one lessons each day in ELS group classes. The course length may be two or four weeks, beginning on any of the 26 year-round Intensive English Program start dates.

Super Intensive Plus

For maximum results in just one week’s time, the Super Intensive Plus Program is the best choice for a busy executive. This highly rigorous course consists of 70 lessons, 50 minutes each, of combined in-class instruction and out-of-class cultural activities, generally taught from Monday through Sunday. Super Intensive Plus is ideal in preparation for an important business presentation or meeting in the United States. Due to the intensity of this program, intermediate English proficiency is highly recommended. ELS will provide assistance with accommodation arrangements.

Super Intensive English (30 lessons)

The ELS Super Intensive English Program is the fastest way to improve English proficiency. This course combines highly concentrated, one-to-one instruction and a curriculum targeted specially to the participant’s needs. Courses are individually designed based upon level of English ability, desired language use and outcomes, and length of time available for study. This program can begin on any Monday and may last for one week to four weeks or more. The Super Intensive Program consists of either 20, 30 or 45 private, 50-minute lessons each week, taught on a Monday to Friday schedule. ELS will provide assistance with accommodation arrangements.

Off-Campus Student Residence

Shared rooms with private bathrooms in off-site private student residence located 30 minutes away from the school. The student residence is shared with American students attending colleges and universities within the New York City area. Each room has a kitchenette with a microwave oven, refrigerator and sink. Students have Internet connection, TV and free local calls in addition to their own bed, dresser, desk, chair and closets. Linens are also included. In the building is a student lounge with a large plasma TV, shared kitchen area, a pool table and a sitting area.

Homestay

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have their own room and are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Patricia Chukurov - Center Director
After a long career in Human Resources on Wall Street, Patricia was delighted to have the opportunity to become Center Director at ELS Manhattan. Patricia brings to the position not only her love of cultural exchange but also her strong business background which helps her run one of the largest and most dynamic Centers at ELS.

Dan Manolescu - Academic Director
For over 25 years, Dan has shared with students his enthusiasm for teaching and learning in the classroom. From classroom to college advisement, he has provided guidance in all aspects of educational achievement. He holds a Masters in English and was a member of the committee which developed the first ELS curriculum.

Jae Woong Youn - Registrar
After completing his MA in Psychology from Youngnam University, Jae Woong worked as a youth counselor in Korea. Seeking other challenges, Jae Woong decided to come to the United States as an F-1 student to continue his studies. After completing his studies in New York City, Jae Woong worked for a community college program which encourages high school students to continue their education after graduation. Jae Woong’s background in youth counseling in addition to expertise in database management are welcomed assets to the ELS Manhattan team.

Rita Wade - International Student Advisor
Rita has taught English to adults and teenagers in both Turkey and Poland, in addition to being a language student herself in Italy and Istanbul. She traveled extensively throughout Europe prior to taking a position at the New York City school system, where she worked for a number of years. Rita holds a Masters in Public Administration in addition to a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She enjoys sharing the wonder and excitement of New York City with international students.
