What is Conditional Admission?

Institutions in the ELS University Conditional Admission Network offer conditional admission to students who are academically admissible based on the student’s academic record and other university and/or departmental and program requirements, but who have not yet demonstrated English proficiency. Your admission is “conditional” based upon satisfying English proficiency through completion of a specified level of the ELS English for Academic Purposes program and any other specific requirements prior to full admission. Once these requirements are fulfilled, you are able to fully matriculate. These requirements will be outlined on your Conditional Letter of Admission, and your selected ELS center will assist you in completing all of the necessary requirements for matriculation.

Additional matriculation requirements may include other required scores, for example, GMAT® or GRE® for graduate programs.

Our ELS University Partners will offer a Conditional Letter of Admission (CLA) detailing the additional requirements needed for matriculation. You and your family can be assured that you have a university placement and ELS registration prior to departing for the USA.

What is the Conditional Admission Process?

  1. Find a university via our University Finder
  2. Apply for university admission and enroll for English studies at ELS Language Centers with help from a local ELS authorized Counseling Agent.
  3. If you are an acceptable candidate for university admission, you receive a letter of "Conditional university admission subject to English proficiency and submission of any other required documentation for matriculation."
  4. Study at any of the 60 ELS Centers in the USA to fulfill the university entrance requirement for English proficiency.
  5. Begin your university program!

Ashkhen Oganesyan, Russia/Parents’ Testimonial

Our family really appreciates the fact that Ashkhen has been provided with a great learning experience at the Garden City ELS center at Adelphi University. Although she has been learning English for quite a few years at school, she has never had an opportunity to immerse herself in the English speaking environment the way it is provided here. Our family is very impressed with the progress she made over the past eight
months. Never before was she able to tell stories, make jokes, understand the language of movies and TV programs in English, and even enjoy reading books written by English and American authors. The width and
depth of knowledge she is getting makes our conversations about some aspects of English very interesting and educational. In addition, she developed a great deal of appreciation for diversity. A very important part of the ELS learning environment is new friendships with students from the USA and various Asian,
European and Latin American countries. Her entire experience here makes our family happy, and we would like to express our gratitude to her masterful teachers and effective administrators.

My name is Oleksandra. I come from Ukraine. I wanted to improve my English language skills prior to entering an American college. Since I had a Conditional Acceptance from Adelphi University, I joined ELS in Garden City in the spring of 2012. I was looking for the opportunity to study English in an interactive environment and to better prepare for my academic life in the university. Thanks to the EAP program, I learned the skills that I needed for my university studies. Research Skills class gave me an opportunity to get introduced to the requirements of the academic writing. Moreover, I had the opportunity to explore the great NYC with the assistance of faculty and staff. Although I got 100 points on the TOEFL, I decided to continue at ELS. As a result, I graduated from level 112, which helped to successfully study at Adelphi University.

The ELS Center in Garden City is a nice place, not only for studying English but also for learning different cultures. I made a lot of friends who come from different countries, such as the Middle East and Europe. Studying at ELS and experiencing multiple cultures helps me understand Americans better. After I graduate I plan to go to Adelphi University to study Human Resources, and this major requires high communication skills with people from different countries. I have found ELS to be the perfect stepping stone to pursue an education in the USA.

I have been a student at the ELS Language Center at Adelphi University in Garden City for six months. If someone asks me what I think of the school, my answer is, “I love it”.

The first day at ELS was hectic, I looked like a deaf-mute. I could not even understand what the bank teller was asking me.. That was really a big problem for a student preparing to attend graduate school. Studying at ELS in Garden City brought me a billion bucks. I now understand the radio clearly, read books quickly, and speak with foreign friends fluently.

Our school location is very convenient. On Friday afternoon, we always go to Manhattan which is only 45 minutes by train. We have visited a variety of museums and tried restaurants from different countries. The university has many facilities such as a gym, a swimming pool, a basketball court, and a library. All facilities are free to ELS students. Furthermore, our school organizes many activities to help us meet Americans such as conversation partners and Contact America activities.

Our teachers here are very friendly. They not only teach us English but also help us with daily challenges. In addition, attending classes at Adelphi let me familiarize myself with life on campus.
I strongly feel that after completing level 112, I will be well prepared to attend college and to succeed in my career. I would definitely recommend ELS in Garden City.

Five months have passed since I arrived here. I have been wondered, puzzled, but never regretted coming TO ELS Language Centers in Garden City to study. This center is located in a good place, were we can experience typical rural life and enjoy city life in less than 40 minutes. This study environment is best ever. Not only do I have classmates from all over the world but I also have local school mates whom I can learn English from. We also have excellent teachers who are passionate and patient to help us improve our Achilles heels. Meanwhile, we also enjoy a lot of activities such as the United Nations tour, going to the theater for the play “Our town”, and visiting Costco. These were part of my most precious experiences here, which I will always appreciate.
