What is Conditional Admission?

Institutions in the ELS University Conditional Admission Network offer conditional admission to students who are academically admissible based on the student’s academic record and other university and/or departmental and program requirements, but who have not yet demonstrated English proficiency. Your admission is “conditional” based upon satisfying English proficiency through completion of a specified level of the ELS English for Academic Purposes program and any other specific requirements prior to full admission. Once these requirements are fulfilled, you are able to fully matriculate. These requirements will be outlined on your Conditional Letter of Admission, and your selected ELS center will assist you in completing all of the necessary requirements for matriculation.

Additional matriculation requirements may include other required scores, for example, GMAT® or GRE® for graduate programs.

Our ELS University Partners will offer a Conditional Letter of Admission (CLA) detailing the additional requirements needed for matriculation. You and your family can be assured that you have a university placement and ELS registration prior to departing for the USA.

What is the Conditional Admission Process?

  1. Find a university via our University Finder
  2. Apply for university admission and enroll for English studies at ELS Language Centers with help from a local ELS authorized Counseling Agent.
  3. If you are an acceptable candidate for university admission, you receive a letter of "Conditional university admission subject to English proficiency and submission of any other required documentation for matriculation."
  4. Study at any of the 60 ELS Centers in the USA to fulfill the university entrance requirement for English proficiency.
  5. Begin your university program!

My host family is amazing. They drive me to school every day and help me all the time. If I have any problem, my host mother, Carol, always helps me to solve it. In my host family, people are pleasant. My house is always clean and cozy. Dinner at home is wonderful. My host mother cooks very well. For example, she makes sushi and spaghetti with lemonade.

This is my first experience living with an American family. In the beginning, everything was fresh and exciting. However, I was very concerned about situations that I could not solve due to differences in culture. Unexpectedly, I feel that I live with the best family. Everyone not only treats me like a family member, but also help me enthusiastically when I have questions. Moreover, my host mother’s cooking is surprisingly fantastic. My host family are always patient when I cannot express English correctly. They converse with me every day. Thank you host family for this opportunity! I will not regret living with my host family. Thank you for giving me these unforgettable memories during my studies in Santa Barbara!

My host family are like friends to me. They give me a lot of advice. For example, they tell me where is the best place to sing karaoke, watch a movie, or buy clothes. They cook very well. Craig loves to cook. He even has a bookcase full of recipe books. Every day I eat different types of food. Moreover, they like to invite friends over to have dinner together so I can practice speaking English. Every Friday, they clean the house and wash towels. They have a cat called Pearl. She likes to play with everyone who sits on the couch. My host family has a beautiful piano in their house, and they allow me to play it. They also like to help me with my homework.

Hello, my name is Sila. I’m from Turkey. Before I came to Santa Barbara, I was looking the best place for me. Besides I improve my English, I also want to learn the American culture in the sunny place. That’s why, I chose Santa Barbara. I can say really sincerely that people in here are so friendly and helpful. For example, when I arrived the SB Airport at the first day, some people who saw me to wait the pickup service approached me and said that is there any problem or can I help you . I think this is the evidence of helpfulness. In addition, teachers and directors in the ELS center are always ready to help any problem. I met with many friends in all over the world. People thinking the choosing Santa Barbara ELS Center, I strongly suggest them here. While you are improving your English , you can enjoy sun, beach and fresh air with friends. It’s really fun.

It's been almost 3 months since I arrived in California. It's passed too quickly. I remember when I first arrived in the host family. I was completely disoriented; the only things I wanted to do was to come back home. Today, for me, it is the opposite. I want to stay here in this beautiful place, by this fantastic family. Santa Barbara is my ideal city, in which I could live forever. It has the perfect weather, a beautiful center and a huge beach.

I spent 3 incredible months, full of emotions. I met so many new people and I have made many new friends. I had the opportunity to do many trips and therefore, to visit many cities. I had the opportunity to improve my English and I'm very happy to have chosen ELS Santa Barbara as my English school. I can not believe that my experience has come to an end. And I can not believe that I will have to say good-bye to the family that hosted me for these 3 months. I will miss them very much. I will miss having dinner with them, doing activities with them, talking to them but overall living with them.

I have been very lucky to live in this wonderful family that has always helped me when I needed it. They have been very helpful to me and they taught me many useful things for my future. However, we will remain in contact but it will not be the same because I will no longer share my experiences directly with them. I am very grateful to my parents who have allowed me to live the best experience of my life. I hope to come back here as soon as possible and meet again all the fantastic people.

Surfing the Internet, seeing all possible language schools, reading testimonials about these schools, I decided to choose ELS school. Several factors influenced on my choice. First of all ELS is the oldest language school of America, its methodology of studying, quality-price ratio, which was acceptable for me. In the beginning the only thing I knew about Santa Barbara was the soap opera with the same name. But I chose ELS in Santa Barbara because there were no Russian students. Why? It forced me to speak English all time.

I liked that when I had arrived at the student residence, the administrative staff met me. I found it easy to talk to them. It was like I knew them for one thousand years. They showed me my room, and then they made some tour around the student residence. They told me about the shops which were close to residence and gave some recommendations about buses, city and so on.

In my first school day I came to the school earlier then I had to. But I didn't sit alone, because one of teachers sat next to me and started to talk. We discussed where I was from, my goals for studying English, my impressions from my first days. Thanks for her I felt the comfortable and friendly atmosphere of ELS school.

The teachers’ team helped me not only with my English studying but individual questions. So I got a lot of valuable experience with English practice. Other teachers showed me how to apply, how to prepare my documents for applying.

Also I liked that every day in school there were some kind of activity from sports activity (like football, volleyball, bowling) to Santa Barbara museums' tours or tours to different cities of California. I am also grateful for the school letting me put on a photo show of my pictures. I had never met such kind hearted and friendly people before that moment.

I like administration staff! The ISA made our out-of-school life more interesting and funnier. I often asked her about famous and nice places in California. Thanks to her I visited Joshua Tree National Park, Sequoia National Park and some ski resorts. The Center Director manages such a kind language school effectively. He can communicate with different people from the whole world independent in their religion and cultural background. He is open-minded person. I was glad to meet him because thanks for him I got a lot of useful pieces of advice, I knew about a lot of interesting thing and found friend. I chose American college and now I am student of this college.

I miss my teachers, my friends from different countries, my room in students' residence where I lived for 9 months, sea beach, Santa Barbara sunsets and sunrises, small class in the school, full of life Santa Barbara. I plan to visit Santa Barbara and the school as soon as possible and meet all my friends again, because they become for me like family.

English Conversation Cafe is best activity in this school. It is good chance to talk with natives. My host family is very kind and they always cook good food. I appreciate what they have done for me.

I like that Santa Barbara is a beautiful city and it has beach. I like this situation. And, this town is safety. This is important for students. In addition, Santa Barbara is easy to access San Francisco, LA, Disneyland, Universal and Las Vegas.

It's a difficult for me to say what I will miss the most. The meeting of all teachers, hosts, students, city people is my treasure. But in the EFE class, The meeting with teachers is great for me, so after my leaving from here, I want to contact all of them...

I decided to go to ELS Santa Barbara because I have a friend that studied here and he liked it. I learned a lot with all my teachers. I thought that my homestay was perfect. The food, the room was so good.

The beach, weather, downtown and the city is very safe. You can go anywhere alone. It is so easy to do everything.

I will miss my friends that I met here and my homestay.

The quality of teaching is very good, I like the teachers, they are very nice. Students services are great. Lisa is very helpful and nice and she helped me a lot. The Homestay is very good. You can improve your English. The family is very nice, they make you feel at home.

The ELS Language Center in Santa Barbara is the best environment for you to learn English and to learn more about the cultures of countries all around the world. The classes are great and the teachers as well, but the opportunity to make friendships with students from Asia, Europe, South America and other continents is the most fantastic experience that you can enjoy in this Paradise City, where you will feel like you are home!

This is a unique opportunity in your life; you’ll go back to your country speaking English and with friends from many nationalities. The city is perfect, you can find every thing that you want, and if you can’t, I’m sure that the Directors from the school will be glad to help you, just like they helped me. I’m really interested in spending more time here, and if you come, you will feel the same way, I bet.

So stop looking for other courses or other cities and come to the ELS Language Center in Santa Barbara. You won’t regret it.
