What is Conditional Admission?
Institutions in the ELS University Conditional Admission Network offer conditional admission to students who are academically admissible based on the student’s academic record and other university and/or departmental and program requirements, but who have not yet demonstrated English proficiency. Your admission is “conditional” based upon satisfying English proficiency through completion of a specified level of the ELS English for Academic Purposes program and any other specific requirements prior to full admission. Once these requirements are fulfilled, you are able to fully matriculate. These requirements will be outlined on your Conditional Letter of Admission, and your selected ELS center will assist you in completing all of the necessary requirements for matriculation.
Additional matriculation requirements may include other required scores, for example, GMAT® or GRE® for graduate programs.
Our ELS University Partners will offer a Conditional Letter of Admission (CLA) detailing the additional requirements needed for matriculation. You and your family can be assured that you have a university placement and ELS registration prior to departing for the USA.
What is the Conditional Admission Process?
- Find a university via our University Finder
- Apply for university admission and enroll for English studies at ELS Language Centers with help from a local ELS authorized Counseling Agent.
- If you are an acceptable candidate for university admission, you receive a letter of "Conditional university admission subject to English proficiency and submission of any other required documentation for matriculation."
- Study at any of the 60 ELS Centers in the USA to fulfill the university entrance requirement for English proficiency.
- Begin your university program!

Hello everybody, I’m Kosuke Horikawa from Osaka, Japan. Before I came here, I didn’t study English so much, because I was busy. Also, I didn’t like English, but I really like it now. Actually, I don’t want to go back to Japan recently because I have had a lot of good friends since I came here. I still want to try conversation with native speaker and other students. After graduation, I’m going to university in Japan, and then I’ll get a license of preschool teacher, and I want to teach English to children. It’s my dream. Also, I hope that they will try to have good conversation with native speaker and they will get an experience for their future.

I’m Yuki Kubota from Tokyo, Japan. My purposes for coming to ELS Tacoma were making foreign friends and speaking English as much as I could. I think ELS Tacoma is good for these purposes because the classes have few students and you can speak a lot. Consequently, it’s easy to make many friends and speak English however you want. I’m really proud of having studied in ELS Tacoma and I greatly appreciate my teachers and friends.

I have been here for 8 months; also I have learned a lot of English. The school really helped me. The school has an awesome International Student Advisor who helps students find a university or transfer to another school etc. If students have any questions, she would pleasure to help.

The advantages of ELS are many. In this gifted chance, I'll mention these good things. The staff is always pushing students to speak English, even during the breaks. They help students with their private issues, and they always have interesting events and trips during the weekends.

Hi my name is Seungyeon Jang. I am from South Korea. Why did I choose the ELS TACOMA center? I found a quiet place where I can concentrate on studying. Also, I love rainy weather. Tacoma’s weather is very nice. It is rainy but not humid. Also Three day is rainy, Three day is sunny in a week. However, I thought about TACOMA before I came here. Tacoma Will let me experience the United States?. Because Tacoma seemed to be a very small town. However, my expectations were off. There was Mt. Rainier in Seattle, and Portland nearby Tacoma. Also there is the teacher who was born and raised in Tacoma, that way took me to many places after school. We have a lot of extracurricular activities Museum of Glass, Downtown tour, such as bowling tournament. Also, I met good people. Good teachers, advisers, and students. This gave me a lot of influence. If I could not meet like these people, I might transfer to another center. So, I cannot forget this experience and people. I love Tacoma.

I changed ELS centers because of closing of my ex-center. But choosing Tacoma is my decision. I have heard that Seattle and Tacoma are two of the most beautiful towns in America. I wanted to study in the lively town like Tacoma. Actually, Tacoma is wonderful! Convenient bus network, beautiful scenery, moderate climate, and awesome ELS! I suppose ELS Tacoma focuses on conversation. Teachers lead students to participate in their class actively and make a great effort to make an enjoyable class. Plus, teachers help students get along well. Therefore both classes and activities are really fun! I love ELS Tacoma! Thank you for a splendid experience!
