Winners of multilingual essay contest to meet at United Nations Headquarters on June 27, 2014

Sixty university students from 28 countries will attend a youth forum at the UN Headquarters on June 27, 2014. The students are winners of an international essay contest created to commemorate the June 2014 start of the 70th anniversary year of the founding of the United Nations Charter.

The essay contest was created by ELS Educational Services, Inc. and the United Nations Academic Impact, in conjunction with Adelphi University, to reinforce the importance of multilingualism in this global world.

The contest, Many Languages, One World, required each student participant to write a 2,000-word essay on global citizenship in one of the six official UN languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish – that was neither the student’s native language nor the language of instruction during his or her pre-university study.

More than 1,400 essays were successfully submitted to the contest, submitted by students from 128 countries around the world. Participants ranged from college freshmen to Doctoral candidates, and their fields of study varied greatly. Ten winners from each language were selected and invited to participate in a five-day conference and youth forum in New York.

The highlight of the youth forum will occur on June 27, at which time the participants will make presentations at the UN Headquarters on selected principles of the United Nations Academic Impact global initiative.
