New ELS Center to open on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University: ELS/Richmond-Kentucky

ELS Language Centers is thrilled to announce that a new Center will be opening on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. The Center is due to open its doors on October 20, 2014.


Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) is a comprehensive institution with more than 16,000 students studying in one of 185 degree programs from associates to doctoral level education.

EKU is located in the heart of Kentucky and is within an easy day's drive of Chicago, Atlanta, and St. Louis, and only 90 minutes from Cincinnati and Louisville.

With internationally renowned programs in College of Justice and Safety and deep roots in Education, Business, Technology, and Health Sciences, EKU offers international students the quintessential college experience taught by professors who making teaching in the classroom their top priority.

Eastern Kentucky University ranks 55th among 95 universities in the top tier of Regional Universities in the South in the 2014 edition of "Best Colleges," published by U.S. News & World Report. Eastern Kentucky University's School of Business has received accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This is a distinction that less than 5% of Business Schools around the world can claim.

EKU is a regional, coeducational, residential, public institution established in 1906. With 16,000 students enrolled at various campuses, graduate, doctorate, and online programs – EKU offers opportunities to nearly every student type. Though the University has multiple campus locations the primary campus in Richmond, KY is 360 hectares in size.

There are currently over 200 student organizations on campus that vary in disciplines. The campus includes a variety of recreation centers that house basketball courts, racquetball courts, pools, personal fitness equipment, running tracks, intramural fields, and group fitness classes. EKU is unique considering the many outdoor recreation areas available for backpacking, hiking, canoeing, camping etc. Eastern Kentucky University offers seven different locations of food service. These range from buffet style to “grab and go” meals, snacks, and drinks.


ELS/Richmond-Kentucky

The ELS facility, with all classrooms, offices and the Language Technology Center, will be located on campus in the Whitlock/Student Services Building. ELS students will have full access to Eastern Kentucky University’s library, recreation facilities, computer labs and other facilities.

On-campus housing will be available for ELS students in the EKU Brockton Studios efficiency units with double occupancy and private bathroom per unit.


Richmond and Madison County

Richmond, Kentucky, is located in Madison County, which has a population of 34,000. Situated just 25 miles north is Kentucky’s second largest city, Lexington, population 305,000.


Fun Things to See and Do in and around Richmond, Kentucky

  • Fort Boonesborough State Park: See historic Fort Boonesborough and enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, miniature golf, and many other outdoor activities.
  • Red River Gorge: Experience rock climbing and the natural beauty of the Red River Gorge. Don’t miss the Natural Bridge, a sandstone rock formation that is 20 meters high.
  • Paradise Cove Water Park: Enjoy fun in the sun at Paradise Cove, where you can immerse yourself in an 8-lane pool with diving boards and multiple slides, including two that are 12 meters tall.
  • King’s Island Amusement Park: The thrills of King’s Island Amusement Park are just a two-hour drive away from Richmond. Feeling brave? Try Banshee, the world’s longest inverted rollercoaster.


Lexington, Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio

Lexington is 30 minutes away, and all the excitement of Cincinnati is under two hours away. Take in a sporting event or concert at Lexington’s Rupp Arena. In Cincinnati, students can spend a day at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden or visit the Cincinnati Art Museum.
