About the program

Study English in Australia and prepare for success in higher education with ELS Australia’s fast-paced, challenging Academic English programs. Whether your goal is to prepare for university study or simply to gain fundamental skills, our range of courses –specifically designed to meet the needs of international students –will prepare you for direct entry into vocational or higher education in Australia. Choose the English course that best fits your needs:

Academic English Preparation 1  (AEP1)

AEP1 provides an introduction to Academic English skills. This 10 week course has been structured to assist Lower Intermediate level students in preparing for our direct-entry course, AEP2. 

Academic English Preparation 2  (AEP2)

AEP2 prepares students for the demands of studying at TAFE or a vocational college. Over 10 weeks, the course develops language and study skills needed to succeed in a tertiary environment. Successful completion of AEP2 provides direct-entry to various Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses, as well as entry into AEP3.

Academic English Preparation 3  (AEP3)

AEP3 is designed to prepare students for studying at university. The focus is on essay writing, research skills, critical thinking, as well as academic  speaking, reading and listening. Successful completion of AEP3 provides students with direct-entry into their chosen Undergraduate or Postgraduate courses at our various partner universities.

The Academic English curriculum is designed to develop your skills and build your confidence in using English in everyday settings. You will learn the fundamentals of academic communication in English and continue to advance your skills over time, allowing you to achieve success in an Australian university or college.

  • Key Language Skills: Our English courses cover all essential language skills such as: essay and report writing, academic listening and reading, note taking, presentation and discussions, critical thinking, and research. You will learn to speak with clarity, listen carefully, and gain the writing competencies necessary to complete your academic assignments with ease and accuracy.
  • Applied Learning: Your English education goes beyond the classroom. ELS Australia offers several Applied Learning opportunities to supplement your coursework and further develop your confidence with the English language. Attend monthly information sessions, meet with your teachers to track your progress, and take part in regular visits to ELS Australia partner institution campuses.
  • ELS Pathways: Successfully completing this program excuses you from the TOEFL® or IELTSTM examination requirements at over 30 Australian ELS partner institutions.

  • Age requirements:
    • Minimum age is 16
  • Entry requirements:
    • Successful completion of a pre-course entry test prior to course commencement to determine your entry point, OR a valid IELTS result: 
    • AEP1 – IELTS 4.5 (No band lower than 4.0)
    • AEP2 – IELTS 5.0 (No band lower than 4.5)
    • AEP3 – IELTS 5.5 (No band lower than 5.0)
