General English (Day) - Australia

About the program

ELS Australia's General English daytime programs support you as you improve essential English language skills. The General English program in Sydney, available in both the day and the evening, can increase your confidence in using English during everyday business and social situations. Practice your conversation skills, improve your writing and grammar, and develop strategic listening skills.

Applied Learning: Benefit from technology-supported learning in Language Technology Classes.

Skills Enhancement Classes: Skills Enhancement Classes (SECs), which rotate every two weeks, allow you to customize your course by focusing on subjects that you find interesting or important.

Flex Classes in General English (Day): Further personalize your General English experience by attending three additional, optional classes each week. These flexible classes will enrich your course. Classes include: Active Listening, Pronunciation Clinic, and Fluency Practice.

2 January, 29 January, 26 February, 26 March, 23 April, 21 May, 25 June, 30 July, 3 September, 8 October, 12 November, 17 December. 

*However students may begin their course on other Mondays. 


General English (Day)

  • Number of levels:
    • 5 Levels: Elementary–Advanced
  • Number of hours per week:
    • 20 compulsory hours per week. In the General English (Day) program ONLY, an additional 2.5 flex class hours are available (22.5 total hours)
  • Number of weeks for each level:
    • 10 weeks to complete each level
  • Course length:
    • Student Visa: up to 52 weeks
    • Working Holiday Visa: up to 17 weeks
    • Tourist Visa: up to 12 weeks
  • Maximum number of students per class:
    • 18 students
  • Age requirements:
    • Minimum age is 16
  • Entry requirements:
    • You must be able to read and write the English alphabet and have a basic conversation, e.g. introduce yourself and say where you are from

ELS offers 5 proficiency levels (Elementary to Advanced), as well as placement testing to determine the level that best fits your abilities. Each level is 10 weeks long, but your performance on assessments every five weeks determines when you can move up to the next level.
